One Month Later

"Are you ready for this?" Ricky asked as I adjusted my tie. Today was my court trial against Samantha to see who will be getting custody of Cassidee. All night and this morning getting ready I've been nothing but a nervous wreck.

''I'm ready as I'll ever be.'' I sighed, looking in the mirror.

''Dude, you're going to get her. I don't think the judge would be that stupid to hand her off to a psychotic drug dealer.''

''It could happen though!"

''I doubt it.'' Ricky and I walked downstairs to see Cassidee sitting on the couch and Ryan hooking up the Xbox, he was already teaching Cassidee the buttons on the controller.

''You're teaching my kid a bad habit.'' I laughed, grabbing my car keys.

''Hey, I tried to stop her.'' Ryan defended, throwing up his hands. I rolled my eyes and walked over to Cassidee, smiling at her.

''Hi, Daddy.'' She smiled.

''Hello. I'm going to be out for a few hours, be good for your uncles. I'll be back soon.'' I smiled, kissing the top of her head.

''I will.''

''Don't keep her on that Xbox too long, make sure she eats lunch, and don't let her go outside by herself,'' I said, walking over to the door.

''We got this! Now go!" Ricky laughed, pushing me out the door. I walked over to the car, getting in, and started it up, pulling out of the driveway. I turned on the radio to keep my mind off of the whole court trial, but it was no use. If Cassidee is sent to be back with her mother, I'll lose it. But like Ricky said let's hope this judge isn't that stupid.

A few minutes later I pulled up in front of the courthouse. I got out of the car, grabbing my papers, and walked up the steps to the building. I spotted my lawyer who was helping me with this case and gave him a small wave, meeting up with him.

''Nervous?" He asked.

''A lot.''

''Don't worry. I've worked with cases like these tons of times.''

''Yeah, but how many fathers have you defended?"

''Two. but when the judge looks over Samantha's papers and all, he's going to terminate her rights.''

''I hope so.'' I looked down the hallway and saw Samantha walking towards us with her lawyer. She had on a black skirt and white blouse. They let her out of the looney bin for today since she had to be present in court.

We glared at each other for a few seconds and then focused our attention on something else. I reached into my pants pocket and turned off my phone, sliding it back in. I looked up at the ceiling and let out a huge sigh. The doors opened up and an older woman walked out, smiling at us.

"The judge will see you now.'' She said. We walked in, standing at our wooden desk, and were asked to raise our right hands to be sworn in. Our judge walked in, he was an older man with glasses and thinning white hair. He didn't look too pleased when he saw us standing there.

''Parties have been sworn in, you may be seated.'' The bailiff said. We each took our seats and watched as the judge opened up his folder and looked over the documents.

''This case is to determine in which party should be awarded sole custody of the child, Cassidee Esperzino.''

''Correct, your Honor.'' Both mine and Samantha's lawyers said.

''I'll allow you and the plaintiff to start.''

''Thank you. Your Honor, my client Christopher Cerulli is here today to prove that he is the better parent for his daughter Cassidee. The defendant left her four-year-old daughter on a hotel doorstep, with a post-it note taped to her shirt and barely any necessities in a Hello Kitty backpack.''
