Chris's POV
A Year Later
"Are you excited about today?" I asked Cassidee as Sabrina straightened out my daughter's skirt.
''Yes! This is gonna be so much fun!" Cassidee yelled, throwing up her arms.
A few months back I registered Cassidee for Kindergarten and today was the big day. She's growing up on me, before I know it she'll be in high school and out of the house. Okay, Chris let's stop thinking about that and get Cassidee to her first day of school.
''You got your lunch?"
''Yep!'' She smiled, holding up her pink Barbie lunch box.
''Well, let's go.'' Cassidee ran out the front door, trying to get the back door open.
''I'll get her.'' Sabrina smiled, going after her.
We pulled up to the school a few minutes later and I turned around to see Cassidee staring out the window. She looked at me and then shook her head no.
''What are you saying no about?" I asked.
''I don't want to go in there.''
''It's only for today and who knows you might meet your best friend in there!"
''Nope! Not going.'' I sighed and looked at Sabrina. "Do you want Sabrina to walk you in?"
''Will you come too?"
''Yes.''
''Okay.'' We got out of the car and we each took one of Cassidee's hands. I held her right while Sabrina held her left. As we walked towards the doors I could hear some parents whisper about us.
''Sticks and stones, Cass.'' I smiled.
We walked up to the door and were greeted by an older woman. She had to be about sixty, she had red-rimmed glasses, short grey hair and was wearing a navy blue pants suit.
''Hello, who do we have here?" She smiled down at Cassidee.
''This is Cassidee. I'm her father Chris and this is my girlfriend Sabrina.''
''Hello Cassidee, I'm Mrs. Fieldmen.''
''Hi.'' She replied, clinging onto my leg.
''Ready to go in now?" I asked, looking down. Cassidee shook her head no again.
''You are welcomed to stay for a few minutes.''
''Want me to go in with you?" Sabrina asked. Cassidee smiled and nodded her head. ''I'll be back soon.'' Cassidee let go of my leg and I watched the three of them walk into the classroom, joining the other kids.
I looked over my shoulder and saw the other kids and their parents staring at me. I gave a friendly smile and gave them a small wave with it too. A few minutes later Sabrina came walking out with a smile on her face.
''Cassidee ok? Did she cry?" I asked as we walked back to the car.
''She loves it! She and another little girl hit it right off the bat, once they started talking I wasn't even needed in there.''
''Oh." I frowned, getting in the car.
''What's wrong?"
''I didn't even get a hug or say goodbye.''
''Don't worry my dear, Cassidee will be home before you know it.''
''Yeah.'' I smiled, starting up the car and pulling away from the school.
I can't wait to hear all about Cassidee's first day at school.
