I took out my phone, scrolling to Ricky's contact, and called him. His phone rang three times before he answered it.
''Hello?"
''Hey, could you do me a favor?"
''Sure. What do you need?"
''Well, I found out where Cassidee's mom is and I kind of want to see her.''
''Really?! Where is she?"
''Wernersville State Hospital.''
''So she's a mental patient?''
''Yeah and I don't want Cassidee being anywhere near that. So could you stop over and watch her? The hospital is only an hour away from Scranton.''
''Yeah, it's no problem. I'll be right over.''
''Thanks.'' We hung up and got off the couch, looking for my keys and shoes. "Cassidee?" She ran back down the steps and stood in front of me, smiling.
''Yes?"
''I'm going out to run a few errands and Ricky's coming over to watch you.''
''Where are you going?"
''I need to go and..talk to someone important. I won't be gone too long, so will you be ok with Ricky?" She thought about it for a second and then smiled, nodding her head. A few minutes later there was a knock at the door and I opened it to see Ricky standing there.
''Hey, dude.'' He said, walking in. ''So you found her mother? What does she look like?"
"She looks like an older version of Cassidee. Pale, black hair and hazel eyes.''
''Why is she in a state hospital though?"
I shrugged my shoulders. ''I don't know. That's why I wanted to go there and find out why.''
''Where's Cassidee at?"
''In the kitchen drawing, she'll be there for hours. If anything happens, just call me and I'll be right back.''
''No problem.''
''Thanks again.'' I walked out the front door and got into my car, starting it up. I strapped on my seatbelt and pulled out of the driveway, going down the road. As I was driving, the questions I had for Samantha were building up one by one in my head.
Why'd she abandoned Cassidee? What or who made her go into the state hospital? Why couldn't her sister take care of Cassidee? And the final one that I had was: Who put those bruises on that little girl?
An hour later I came up to a large white building. I looked at the entrance sign that read: Wernersville State Hospital. I drove up to a barrier gate and waited for it to lift. Once it did, I drove into the parking lot and searched for a parking space.
I pulled in, turning the car off, and just sat there, looking at this place. Oh! Man! This is so weird! I feel like I'm at the beginning of a bad horror movie. Every movie I've seen about psychopaths always starts with a mental hospital.
I got out of the car and walked across the lot, going through the entrance doors. I was stopped by two security guards before I could get in any further. I walked through a metal detector, putting my phone, keys, and wallet in a bin, and then was searched with a wand by one of the guards.
''Are you visiting?" One of them asked.
''Yes.''
''Go up to that front desk and ask for the patient's name.''
''Thank you.'' I grabbed my stuff and walked up to the desk, where a nurse was sitting behind it.
''Can I help you?" She smiled at me.
''I'm here to visit a patient.''
''What's the patient's name?"
''Samantha Esperzino.'' She pulled out a large blue binder and flipped through several pages. She ran her finger down the page, stopping, and then picked up a phone.
''I have a visitor here for Samantha. Should he go and see her?" Please don't tell me she's a complete nut case in a straight jacket! ''Okay, I'll let him know.'' She put down the phone and smiled at me again. "Someone will be out and they'll take you to the visitation area.''
''Thank you.'' I stood there and looked around this place. Besides the metal detector and security guards sitting there, the front of this place looked like a regular lobby. There were about twenty individual chairs, a small TV, and two vending machines, one for drinks and the other for snacks.
I heard the sound of a door unlock and a guy, a little older than me walked out. "Are you the one visiting for Samantha?"
''Yeah.''
''Follow me.'' I followed him through the door, walking down a bright hallway. We mostly passed offices and storage closets. He came up to another door and typed in a code on a numbered pad, unlocking it. We walked into a large room with several chairs and tables, only three other people were in there.
''Just take a seat and she'll be right out.'' I walked over to a table, one that was the farthest away from anyone else here, and took a seat. I placed my hands upon the table and started to tap my fingers. A few seconds later, a door opened up and two nurses came walking out with Cassidee's mother.
The air in my lungs stopped and I became paralyzed. She was wearing a grey shirt, grey pants, and hospital slippers. She was also sporting two white wristbands on her left wrist. Samantha looked like she hadn't eaten in weeks and her eyes looked very tired. They sat her down across from me and then walked away, going back through the door.
We didn't say anything, we just looked at each other. She looked down at her fingers and started to play with them as I burned holes in her skull.
"So where do we start?" I smirked, folding my hands. Either she's too messed up to talk or she's too scared to talk to me because she knows she's now in hot water.
