I pulled into the driveway and noticed that the house was completely dark. I got out and quietly walked in through the front door. The only light that was on was coming from the stove light in the kitchen. I took off my coat, hanging it over the chair, and sat down for a second.
''Hey!'' I jumped a little and turned around to see Ricky walking in. ''I didn't even hear you come in.''
''Yeah, the house was pretty dark. Are the kids upstairs?"
''Yeah. Hey, I need to talk to you about Cassidee.'' He said, sitting across from me.
''I was just about to bring her up. Was she all right?"
''She was pretty upset tonight. Cassidee stayed in her room for the rest of the night, until I made the boys go and cheer her up.''
''What did she say?"
''Cassidee's afraid you don't love her anymore because you've been spending time with Sabrina.'' I tipped my head back, sighing, and closed my eyes.
''I knew this would happen. I need to go and talk to her.'' I got up and walked out of the kitchen, going upstairs.
I slowly opened her door and saw her and the twins fast asleep. Cassidee was cuddled into Braxton and Milo was stretched out at the bottom of the bed. A smile spread across my face as I walked further into the room.
''I got a little suspicious when it got too quiet up here. I better wake them up, I have to take them back to Jess's in the morning.''
''No don't, let them sleep. Crash here for the night and just go home in the morning.''
''Alright.''
*******************************************
I was sitting at the table the next morning when Cassidee came walking in. She walked right past me, opened the refrigerator door, and pulled out a juice box.
''Cassidee,'' I said, turning to look at her. She poked the straw into the small box and walked into the living room. Cassidee even walked past Ricky without saying a word and usually, she talks his ear off.
''Well, she's in a pleasant mood today,'' Ricky said, sitting next to me.
''My five-year-old is giving me the cold shoulder.''
''Just talk to her. I'm sure this will blow over.''
''I hope so.''
''Well, I better go and see if Braxton and Milo are awake.'' He got up from the chair and walked upstairs, going to Cassidee's room. I got up myself and walked into the living room, sitting next to Cassidee on the couch.
''Why aren't you talking today?" She just shrugged her shoulders. ''You're never this quiet.'' Cassidee shrugged her shoulders again.
''We're leaving!?" Milo yelled while Ricky flung him over his right shoulder.
''Nope! I'm staying!" Braxton said, gripping to the stair banister. I turned my head and smirked at the sight before my eyes.
''Need help?"
''I got this!" Ricky pried Braxton off the banister and flung him over his left shoulder, going out the door. ''I will see you later.'' He panted, going out the door.
''Well now that it's just us, what's wrong?" I said, poking Cassidee's arm.
''Nothing.'' It wasn't much, but at least it got her talking.
''Obviously, it's something, now tell me.''
''No.''
''Tell me.''
''No.'' She said, only this time she raised her voice a little.
''Cassidee, you have to tell me so I know how to fix this.'' She lowered her head as little sobs escaped her mouth. I pulled her into my lap and cradled her in my arms.
''You-you ha-hate me-e! You don't lo-love me no more.'' She cried harder into my chest.
''I do too love you. Cass, there's going to be people coming in and out of my life, but they can't or won't change how much I love you. I will always love you no matter what and I could never hate you."
Cassidee lifted her head and gave me a small smile. ''Promise?"
"I promise.'' I smiled, hooking our pinky fingers together.
