"Will you stop shaking your leg?" Sabrina said, looking over at me.''I'm sorry, but I can't help it,'' I replied, now starting to bite my nails.
Sabrina and I were sitting in the examination room, waiting for this doctor to come in and tell us the news. Every negative thought I could think of was running through my head and making me ten times nervous.
"Hello, how are you two today?" The doctor asked, walking in.
''Just fine.'' Sabrina smiled.
''So, you think you're pregnant?" She asked, looking over Sabrina's papers.
''I took a home pregnancy test, but wasn't sure.''
''Okay, let's take a look. Lie on your back and lift your shirt.''
Sabrina laid on her back, pulling up her shirt as the doctor squeezed the gel on her stomach. She pulled over the machine, turning it on, and moved the transducer around her stomach.
I looked over to the screen and saw nothing but black and white. The doctor looked over as well and pushed a few buttons on the machine.
"You see that little flicker on the screen? That's your baby's heart.''
''So, I'm..pregnant?"
''Yes, you are, looks like you're around seven weeks, take good care of it.''
I sat back in the chair and rested my head against the wall, looking up at the ceiling. I wasn't just responsible for Cassidee, but now I'm going to be responsible for another human being.
''Thank you.'' Sabrina smiled, wiping off her stomach.
"We'll see you back in a few more weeks.'' The doctor smiled, walking out the door.
''I'm so happy, how about you? Hello? Chris?"
''Huh?"
''Are you happy about this?"
''I'm thrilled. I'll meet you in the car.'' I got out of the chair and walked out of the office, getting into the car.
I rested my head against the steering wheel and closed my eyes, thinking about the news I just received. Not one kid, but now two! How in the hell am I going to deal with this?
''I thought you would've been somewhat happy back there!" Sabrina said, getting in the car. ''Or you could've acted like you were.''
''What are we going to do?"
''The same thing we do with Cassidee, care for them and love them, no matter what.''
''I'm not ready to have another kid.''
''Well, it's too late now! You should've thought of that before we got into bed.''
I started up the car and drove back home, not saying a single word. We pulled into the driveway and I got out, unlocking the front door, and walked inside, laying on the couch.
''Are you scared?'' Sabrina asked, walking in.
''What?"
''Are you scared about this baby? Because you sure are acting like it.''
''No.''
''Then what's bothering you?" She looked at me while sitting down.
''I'm thinking of the what if's, that's all. Like what if I end up promising them I'll always protect them and I fail, like with Cassidee?''
''That's not going to happen and you didn't fail Cassidee. Stop thinking negatively about this, nothing bad is going to happen. Now I'm going to run some errands and then I'll pick up Cassidee from school. You stay here and rest your mind.''
I waved her on and continued laying on the couch, thinking about this new baby.
''I wish she didn't say nothing bad is going to happen because something will.''
