One Month Later
I strapped Cassidee in her car seat, closing the door, and got in the driver's seat. I started the car up and stared in the rearview mirror, looking at Cassidee. I hope this works out.
''You ready to go?" I asked, smiling.
''Yes!" I pulled out of the driveway and drove down the street to my parents. Today was Thanksgiving and I wanted my whole family to finally meet my daughter.
A few minutes later, we pulled up to the house where there were several other cars. I got out of the car and opened Cassidee's door, unbuckling her. We walked up to the front door and I rang the doorbell, waiting for the door to open.
''Chris!" My mom cried, hugging me. ''Come in!"
''Well before I do, there's someone I want you to meet.'' I stepped aside to reveal Cassidee behind me. My mom looked down at her and then back to me.
''A child?''
''She's my child.''
''Come in, get in here.'' We walked in as she closed the door. We stood in the small hallway, away from everyone else. "Explain.''
''A few months back she was left on my hotel doorstep. Her mom abandoned her because she was a terrible drug addict and the current boyfriend, let's just say he wasn't the best. I got a DNA test and she's mine. Oh, I went to court and I was granted sole custody of Cassidee.''
''Why didn't you tell me earlier I was a grandmother!" She smiled, slapping my arm.
''Sorry.'' I lightly laughed. ''I didn't know how you and the family were going to take it.''
''My baby had a baby.'' I looked down at Cassidee and shook my head, which she did the same. I crouched down to Cassidee's side and explained who my mother was.
''Cass, this is my mom, your grandmother.''
''She's adorable! She looks just like you! Bring her into the dining room to meet the rest of the family.'' I stood up, taking my daughter's hand, and walked further into the house.
I was glad to say that my family was accepting of Cassidee, even though it was sudden. My parents seemed to love her the most and I could tell they were going to spoil her rotten. What shocked me the most was how open Cassidee was to them. Like I've said before, she fits right in with the family.
Today I was thankful for a lot of reasons. I was thankful that I had my health, friends and family. But I was most thankful for having Cassidee in my life. She deserves to be around people that care and love her and that's how it's going to be for a long time.
''So where's her mother at?" My mom asked.
''Wernersville State Hospital. Her family tried putting her in rehab, but that didn't work and she has some mental problems, obviously.''
''What about her other family?"
''They wouldn't accept her because she was out of wedlock. So, I'm glad to say I have her in my life.'' I smiled, watching Cassidee play with her new cousins.
''I'm proud of you. You're giving her a second chance, you know that? She deserves a family and now she has one to call her very own.'' My mom smiled and pulled me in for a hug.
''Thanks, Mom.''
