Today is the last day we finish up our tour and can go home and sleep in a regular bed! We just finished up a show in New York and are all ready to head back home to Pennsylvania. I'm more eager than the guys because I want to see if I got any letters back from that lab.
I know it'll probably be a few more days until I hear or get anything, but you never know and things might come sooner than expected.
''I'll talk to you later tonight dude!" Ryan said as he patted Ricky on the back, after high-fiving him.
''Come here you.'' Ricky smiled as he crouched down to Cassidee's height. ''You're a cool, awesome kid you know that?''
''Me?'' She smiled, pointing to herself.
''Yes! You're a rad four-year-old. Can I have a quick hug before I leave?" He opened his arms. Cassidee wrapped her arms around Ricky and hugged him tightly.
''You're leaving?"
''Yeah, but I'll still see you.''
I smiled as I witnessed the small connection Cassidee made with the guys over the past few days. A bond over drawing and art with Angelo, piercings with both Josh and Ricky, but not so much with Ryan and Devin. But I'm sure they'll quickly bond over something once she opens up a little more.
''I'll see you later then dude?" Ricky asked standing back up.
''Definitely.'' I nodded.
''You'll let me know what goes on this week, right?"
''Of course. Now get going!" I laughed.
''See you guys later.'' Ricky got off the bus and walked up to his front door. The only ones left now are just Angelo, Cassidee, and myself.
''Are you hoping for good news this week?"
"Of course. Even if it's not good news, she'll still have a warm home.''
"That's good.'' I looked out the window and saw that the bus finally pulled up to my house and there stood the mailbox insight.
''Looks like this is you, Chris.'' I hesitated a moment before standing up and gave Angelo a quick hug and a high five. I took Cassidee's small hand in mine.
Angelo bent down to meet Cassidee at her level and smiled at her, giving her a piece of folded paper. She unfolded it and gasped at what she was looking at. Angelo had taken the picture she drew and altered our figures.
"Ange?" I questioned.
''I figured when she misses us when we're not touring, she can just look at that picture.''
''Thanks, man! Do you like that Cassidee?" She smiled, nodding her head, and automatically attached herself to Angelo.
''Or if you want to Skype with us and we can all video chat?"
''Yeah, I think she'd like that.''
''Come on, Cass, time to go home.''
She picked up her pink Hello Kitty backpack, frowning, and stepped off the bus with me. We walked up to the front door, me stopping to get the mail, and quickly shuffled through it. Nothing! Not one letter from the lab.
''Let me know!" Angelo yelled before the bus drove down the street.
''Unfortunately, it's nothing.'' I sighed.
I fished my house key from my pocket, putting it in the doorknob, and opened the door. I lead Cassidee inside first, turning on the light, closing the door. I set my bags down by the door, walking over to the couch, and flopped down on it.
Cassidee awkwardly stood in the middle of the floor, not knowing what to say or do. She was so little and cute, she had no idea. Which reminded me, I haven't thought about looking inside her backpack nor did she offer the invitation.
''Come here.'' Cassidee walked over, backpack still in hand, and crawled onto the couch, sitting beside me.
''You never really opened your backpack since you stayed with me and the guys. Can we open it?"
She pulled the small zipper open and let it hang open for me to look inside. If you were going to leave a child at someone's door at least put more than three things in it! It was scarce! One pair of socks, a solid purple shirt, and some jeans. No food, not even a goodbye note!
''Did Mommy pack this for you?"
She nodded her head yes. Wow! You'd think a mother would put a little more in since she carried her and gave life to her, but nope!
''Tell you what? This weekend I'll take you and get you better clothes.''
She gave a small smile and sat back against the couch. I sighed running my fingers through my hair and looked down at Cassidee. A beautiful creature, but wrongfully abandoned by her mother. My little creature. Woah! Woah! Don't get too ahead of yourself Chris! She may not be yours. I shook the thought from my head and got up walking into the kitchen.
''Damn!'' I muttered as I remembered Cassidee being in there by herself. I quickly turned around and stopped when I noticed her down in front of me.
''I was just coming out to get you.'' I smiled picking her up. I placed Cassidee on the counter and opened the refrigerator looking for something to feed us. Hmm, what to eat? My refrigerator was pretty scarce itself because I haven't been to the store in a few months because of touring. Well, it looks like Cassidee and I are going to do a little food shopping.
''What do you say me and you go for a ride to the grocery store?" I laughed.
''Shotgun!" She yelled, running out of the kitchen and over to the front door. I quickly caught up behind her before she could get any further, grabbed my keys, and went outside getting into the car.
''I think you're a little too young for shotgun, Cass. How about for now you stay in the back?" I smiled, opening the back door.
''Otay Daddy.'' My chest clenched up as I heard her say that word as I buckled her seatbelt. I closed the door going over to my side, getting in and closing the door, starting up the car. I pulled out of the driveway, onto the street, and drove off to get some groceries. I pulled into the local grocery store parking lot, turning the car off, and got out to get Cassidee out of the back.
I opened her door and attempted to unbuckle her, but she held up her little hand and clicked down on the button releasing the belt. She hopped out of the car, automatically taking my hand as we walked into the store. I got a cart and started walking down the aisles for food that both Cassidee and I would eat.
Halfway through our shopping, you could say that the cart was about reaching its limit, but I wanted to make sure I had everything Cassidee would possibly eat at the house.
''Cassidee, do you want cheese or pepperoni on your-'' I looked down and she was gone! I did a complete turnaround and she was nowhere in the aisle! I started running with the cart and looked down every possible aisle. Thankfully, I found her two aisles from the previous one we were in, reaching for a box of cereal. I should've known she'd go for that aisle.
''There you are!" I said walking closer to her.
''Daddy, I can't reach that!" She stretched her little arms to the shelf. I looked at the box of Lucky Charms and smiled, lightly chuckling.
''You want that?"
''Yes!" I picked the box from the shelf, placing it in the cart, and then placed Cassidee in it as well.
''Can I get Twrix too?''
''One is good, baby doll.'' Did I just call her baby doll?
''Please! Please!'' She stared up at me and started giving the sad puppy dog eyes. No way! Not falling for it!
''Okay! Two is the limit. I don't need you bouncing off the walls.'' I laughed picking the box of Trix cereal off the shelf. I paid for the groceries once we were done shopping and loaded them into the trunk as Cassidee got in the car, strapping herself in. I got in starting the car up and pulled out of the parking lot going home to feed my daughter.
Dammit, Chris! Stop calling her that and acting like she's yours! You have a few more days before you get those results, so stop acting like a big softie!
