I woke up the next morning and saw that Cassidee was gone from the bed. I instantly got out of bed and ran into the bathroom, checking there and nothing! I ran out of the bedroom and down the steps, walking into the kitchen to see Cassidee standing on one of the kitchen chairs. She was attempting to reach the box of Lucky Charms and her back turned towards me.

''Sneaky little devil.'' I smiled as she quickly turned around and saw me. "What in the world are you doing?" I chuckled.

''Time to eat.'' I picked her up and placed her down on the counter.

''You should've woke me up.''

''But I always get up and feed myself.'' I grabbed a bowl and the cereal from the pantry and poured Cassidee a bowl.

''Mom didn't wake up and feed you?"

''No, because she was sweeping! I did it all by myself.'' She was very proud of her self-independence but unaware of her mother's laziness. I grabbed the milk from the refrigerator, pouring it into the bowl, and setting it on the table. I set Cassidee down at the table and handed her a spoon from the drawer.

''Well now when you wake up and you're hungry, wake me up okay?" She nodded her head, putting a spoonful of cereal in her mouth as I kissed the top of her head. Which reminds me I have to check the mailbox. ''Cass, I'll be right back. I'm going to check the mailbox.''

I walked to the front door, opening it, and stuck my hand into the mailbox, taking out three white envelopes. Bill, bill, and junk mail. Still no word from the clinic in Indiana! I walked back into the house, closing the door, and tossed the mail onto the coffee table. I walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table, sighing.

''What's wrong?"

''I was sort of hoping for a surprise letter in the mail, but it didn't come.''

''Don't worry, be happy!'' Cassidee smiled, throwing up her arms. She finished up her breakfast and ran up the steps, going into the bathroom while I cleaned up and made myself some coffee. I was sitting at the table, drinking my coffee when the phone rang and caught me off guard.

I looked down at the screen and saw it was Ricky calling. I accepted his call and placed the phone to my ear.

''Hello?"

''Hey! What's up?''

''Just woke up and got Cassidee fed.''

''Did you hear anything yet?"

''No, but I discovered a few more things about Cassidee.''

''Like what?"

''I finally looked in her backpack and her mother only gave her three articles of clothing! Pajama bottoms, socks, and a shirt."

''Damn!"

''That's not the end of it. After we ate dinner and I was getting her ready for bed, she undressed and she had bruises around her shoulders, neck area, and thighs. Then this morning she tells me she's used to getting up and making her breakfast because her mother won't do it.''

''Jesus! Who do you think could've left the bruises?"

''Probably her mother or the boyfriend she's mentioned to me.'' I raised the coffee cup to my mouth and took a sip.

''Boyfriend? You still sure Cassidee might be yours?''

''It doesn't matter because I'm going to track down her mother and fight for custody of her. Father or not I don't want her back there or anywhere else.''

''Good! So what's on the agenda for you two?"

''I was thinking of taking her to get some clothes and then picking up a few things for the house.''
