The first few months were filled with work; Testing battle capability, compatability, loyalty.
Tanzenite and Jasper were compatible, loyal, and capable, the only thing that was starting to grind at Tanzenite was her lack of understanding her Jasper.
Everything was so regal, so calm and calculating, she never just jumped into a fight for no reason. That much was plain, but she wanted to know the other half, the half that would stop her from getting hurt in sparring matches, the half that would say "good luck," or "nice one!" When she fought. She wanted to know what she thought of her.It was late, about ten years into the colony. Every day was the same, await orders for the next day, but do as you will before then. This was the time Tanzenite usually stole off to read history or explore the area. She was sure not to be seen. She had no clue why, she just felt like she had to stay out of site. Tonight, however, was different. Just as she was getting ready to head out, Jasper stopped her.
"Ah, ah, ah. Just where do you think you're going?" Tanzenite froze and turned, looking ashamed.
"I was-" Jasper looked at her with a curious gaze. She looked at how she stopped, how she was looking at her and put a hand on her hip.
"You want to explore, don't you?" She said with a smirk.
"I... yes. This planet is beautiful, and I want to see more of it." Jasper's smile grew a little and she placed her hand on her head.
"Then let's go, I don't have anything to do tomorrow." She looked up at her from under her hand and smiled. The next day they teleported to a new area they hadn't been before.
Tanzenite's eyes shone bright as she looked out over the sea.
"You can see forever!" She turned to see Jasper taking a deep breath in. She looked back put over the ocean. The waves were sliding over her feet like gentle hands coaxing her to step further. A sudden gust of wind sent her hair flying in all directions. She smiled widely and let herself fall into the waves. The water covered her back and neck. She felt like it could carry her away.
"Hey... Tanzenite?" Jasper's voice broke the silence of her joy.
"Yes?"
A pause.
"Nothing, it's not important." She stood up from the water and wrung out her hair a little.
"Everything you say is important. Is something the matter?" Their eyes locked. She could feel something behind Jasper's amber eyes, but not enough to make any clear prediction.
"I... No, really, just... Nevermind." She looked away and sat on the beach behind Tanzenite.
Tanzenite sighed and stepped away from the waves and sat in front of her and grabbed her hand.
"I like spending time with you too." Jasper made a crooked smile.
"Heh..."The two watched the stars rise and fall all through the night. Not saying a word. Just being in each other's company was enough.
The next day they walked along the beach and into the hills. They trekked for long hours. All without saying unnecessary things.
A trip was caught, a cliff was avoided, all without the needless use of words.
The only tell of friendship was in the smiles that the two gave to another as gifts. Jasper's, a long dimpled smile that hid her teeth for once. Tanzenite's, a short and pointed smile the curled at one side. Words were meaningless in the light of adventure. On and on they traveled, until, eventually, they decided to head back to their base.
There, the fun came to an end.
There, is where everything changed.
