What a smile might hide

A smile can hide what you're truly feeling
And no one can really understand what you're going through
So, you hide behind a smile because that's your way of dealing
And, if people smile back, it helps you

It helps you gain your oomph back
Even though you don't necessarily need it
It helps get you back on track
And, only then, will you, to yourself admit

You'll admit something's definitely wrong
And it's been like that for a while
It's been like that for too long
Even when you smile a real smile

So, you didn't notice something was really not right
Because you smiled a real smile sometimes too
So, you didn't know you needed to fight a certain fight
Because you thought you're okay and there's nothing wrong with you

Once you realized something wasn't right
It felt like it was too late
But it's never to late for you to fight your own special fight
Maybe not so special, because it's not first rate

But, once you realized that, you put your foot down
And decided to do something about turning that fake smile into a real smile
You decided to smile once a day in a mirror and not turn that smile into a frown
So, that's what you did and it worked for a while

But, the problem was still there
You didn't know why your smile was sometimes never real
So, you decided to see, because, about yourself, you care
And you didn't want to make a whole big deal

So, you sat down, one day, to see what was going on in your mind
You wrote down everything and then you saw it:
You saw why you're in such a bind
Because you have something hard to admit

You have what's known as a mental illness
And it hard to admit to others who are different in many ways
They will think you're less then and they'll think you're a mess
So, you decide it's better to keep quiet and to not, a word, say

But the problem lies right there
I know it's hard to do
But, sometimes, to your close friends, you gotta share
Even if it's hard for you

When people ask you "are you okay?"
If they mean it sincerely, try to answer honestly
If they're not sincere, then do not, anything, say
Just smile and say "I'm fine; nothing's the matter with me"
