After Kat and Kade left I went almost straight to bed. All the recent events had me really tired out and I hadn't slept much. But this time I fell asleep almost immediately and slept the whole night through... Almost

I woke up to voices downstairs. I blink my eyes trying to adjust to the darkness and look for my phone. I locate it and look at the time. 1:30 am. Who could be up at this hour?

I hear the voices again but this time they're louder.

I get out of my bed, slip a sweatshirt on and open my door to listen.

"You don't appreciate anyone in this house! Especially me!"

That's my mom. And that can only mean that she's arguing with my dad.

"Well maybe it's because there's nothing to appreciate!"

He doesn't mean that does he? He can't. I bet he's drunk. He doesn't know what he's saying.

"You did NOT just say that! How could you do this to me? To us? While I'm out working my butt off to provide for this family you're out getting drunk and doing I don't even want to know what else."

"Trust me I looked for a job! No one wanted me! And so what, I have a couple drinks a day. So what?!"

I'm still frozen in the doorway. I can't move. I want to go back to my bed, hide under the covers and forget everything that they're saying but I can't. I want to go break up the fight but I can't move. My legs feel like they weigh 2 tons. I can't even make a sound.

"I can't even spend the day with my children. I've been working practically twenty-four seven. I don't even know what's going on in their lives. They just started a whole new school experience and I haven't even asked them how it's going. Do you know how hard that is for a mother? NO! You don't! Because you were never there for them anyways."
She stops yelling finally.
"And you know what. As much as it pains me to say... I'm beginning to think that maybe we -us- was a mistake."

No. She can't mean... No. They would never. Would they?

"Are you suggesting we get a divorce?"

My dads voice drops lower and I almost think I misheard him. But what my mom says next breaks my heart.

"Yes."
