First Day

"I don't know about this."
I say apprehensively as I stand outside the turquoise door leading into Special Days Cakes.

"You'll do fine sweetie. I promise."
My mom says with a warm smile and a rub on the back.

I turn to look at her.
"What if they don't like me? What if I can't do anything? What if I mess up all the orders? What if I absolutely suck at everything? What if-"

She cuts me off by pressing her pointer finger to my lips.
"Ssshhhh. You will be just fine. And it's only your first day so it's fine if you mess up. You just have to learn from your mistakes. And as for the part about no one liking you, everyone will. Trust me."

I twist my lips to the side and shift my weight to my left leg as I stare at the door.

I sigh and say.
"Okay lets do this before I change my mind."

We walk inside and I'm immediately immersed in the fresh bakery smell of cookies, cake, and coffee.

There are glass cases displaying all kinds of goods. Sugar cookies with pink frosting decorated to look like a flower, macaroons in a variety of colors, cupcakes with swirls, cake pops with sprinkles and many more mouthwatering desserts. The walls are painted turquoise, like the door, and the windows have black curtains that had been drawn back so the natural light plays on the walls. White chairs and tables sit on the wood floor with a small vase of flowers in the center of each one.

"I haven't been here in forever."
I say in awe.

"Do you like it? We just recently updated it."
My mom says as she steps behind the brown, wooden counter.

"It's wonderful."
I say as I continue to gaze.

My mom claps her hands together.
"The store opens in forty minutes, so let me teach you the basics. Today you'll just be working the cash register and bagging up the goods."
She beckons me behind the counter and hands me a light blue apron with a pink cupcake on it next to the shops name.

"Ready?"

"Two pistachio macaroons coming right up."
I say with a smile as I walk away from a customer to put the treats into a sack.

"Here you go. Enjoy!"
I hand them their bag and they walk back out the door.

The store is empty now that the lunch rush is over. You'd be surprised at how many people come here to eat a cupcake for lunch.

"Why don't you take a break Ellie. You've worked so hard today."
My mom says from behind me.
"Now that you're here we've had more time to bake. We've already completed three cakes. I'm about to deliver them now."

I smile.
"Thanks mom. I've really enjoyed being here."

I walk out from behind the counter and sit in one of the white metal chairs. I pull out my phone and smile when I see that Timothy messaged me.

Timothy❤️-
Good luck Ell. I know you'll do great.

That was sent only a couple minutes after I started my shift. He continued to send me more messages.
