TIME SKIP TO NOVEMBER

It's Thursday the 11th. Two more days till my birthday and not a word has been spoken about it. I've tried dropping not so subtle hints like
"Hmmmm. What day is it? The 11th?! Wow. That means that Sunday is the 13th. Would you look at that."
And
"I think there's a pretty big day coming up right?"
My response to that one was
"I know! Thanksgiving is right around the corner."

Honestly, I'm fine without the party, the presents, and the cake. All I really want is a "happy birthday Ellie!". Is that too much to ask? Well apparently...

"Cmon Nate! We need to go!"
I try and pull Nate away from the table by his arm, but he won't budge.

"Just a sec."
He holds up his pointer finger in the air.

"You said that five minutes ago. We. Need. To. Leave."
This time I try and shove him out of his chair.

"Just let me finish this."

I try and peer over his shoulder to see what he's up to but he just shifts his position. All I could see was he was texting someone.

"Who are you texting that's so important? If it's your friend you can just see them at school. Which were about to be late to. So let's get a move on!"

He throws his hands up in defeat.
"Fine! Ok! Let's go."

"Thank you."
I say as I grab my bag and walk towards the door.

"Hey guys."
I say as I sit down at the outdoor lunch table that's shaded by a large oak tree. Kadence, Katherine, Timothy, and Nate are there.

"Hey Ellie!"
Everyone says in unison. There's a small pause before everyone breaks out in laughter.

"Why do we always do that?"
Kade says.

"We're just so in sync."
I reply still laughing.

"I know. We're so connected."
Kat says.

"So Ellie. Remember that big thing coming up?"
Kade asks.

A wide grin settles in my face.
"You remember?"

"Of course! The math test is next Monday and I haven't studied one bit. I'm screwed. We need to have a study day so I can pass. Would you mind?"

My smile fades slowly into a fake one.
"Oh yeah. That. Um ok. We can do that. When?"

"Does Sunday work?"

I clear my throat.
"Sunday? The thirteenth?"

"Yeah. I'm busy Saturday so that's the only other day that's free."

"What about today?"
I ask. Had really hoped to not spend my birthday studying math. The worst subject of all. Curse the stuff.

"Sorry. Mom's taking us to Lawton so we can get some new dance shoes. So you up for it?"

"Yeah. Sure. What time?"
My hopes have all washed away. Everyone really doesn't remember.

"How about 5?"

"Ok that works."
At least I'll have most of the day to myself.

We hear the bell ring. I look down at my peanut butter and honey sandwich. I didn't even eat a bite of it. Oh well. I'm not that hungry anymore.

"See you guys later."
I get up from the table and rush to the door throwing away my sandwich on the way.

They forgot. They really forgot. They've never forgotten before. I sigh. Oh well...
