Ummmm... A Tutor?!

Today we get our tests back. I really hope I did well. I bounce my knee repeatedly as Nate and I drive to school. Nate constantly tells me to stop and that I'm shaking the car. And I do stop, for about five seconds. Then it resumes. I'm trying to withhold my anxiety but I'm too impatient. Luckily science is my first class.

We finally pull into the school and I immediately get out of the car and rush into the building. Boy was that a mistake. Now I have to sit in class for another seven minutes. Which was torture. But it finally passed. Everyone was here now and the teacher just entered the room.
Kadence was on my left, Katherine behind me, and Timothy was two seats in front of me. After organizing all of her papers, my teacher begins to talk.

"Ok class. I have your final grades from your tests. I was very surprised at some of the scores." She says

Surprised? What does she mean by that? I swear she looked right at me when she said that. I knew it. I failed. I just lost ten percent of my grade.

"I'll pass them out now."

I squeeze my eyes shut. I can't stand to look. I don't want to see a big, red F on my paper.

"Psssst!"

I squint my eyes open and turn to my left. Kadence was staring at me.

"Look at your test!"

"I just can't! I can't fail Kade. I just can't."

She smiles at me.
"Well you don't have to worry about that. Now look!"

I move my eyes down to the paper to see a big, red A+.

"I got one hundred." I whisper.

"Yeah. You did. Congrats girl!"

I still couldn't believe it. I actually passed it. Huh. I guess dreams really do come true.

Mrs. Roberts snaps me out of my daze.
"Ladies? Is there something you'd like to share with the class?"

"No ma'am. I'm sorry. It won't happen again."

She gives us a stern look.
"It better not."

I glance at Kade and we both smirk.

The bell rings signaling us to go to our next class. I pack up my stuff and I'm about to leave when Mrs. Roberts calls mine and Timothy's name.

"Ellie, Timothy. Please stay behind for a moment."

Why does she want us? It's definitely not to talk about my grade. She wouldn't need both of us to discuss it and I did well.

I look to Timothy. He doesn't look surprised. He looks a little scared in fact.

We walk up to the desk. I have a confused look about my face.

"I have a matter I need to discuss with you both."

I glance at Timothy again. He's staring at his shoes.

"I don't intend to share your personal information Timothy. You may share your score with Ellie if you wish. But the pressing matter is you did not do well on the test. In fact you have been falling behind in this subject for quite a while. I'm not saying this to bring your spirits down, but I believe I have a solution."

She looks to me now.

"Ellie was the only one with a perfect score."

My eyes widen. I was? How is that possible?
I glance once more at Timothy. He looks at me and gives a small smile. I look away from him.

"Since Ellie did so well I would like her to tutor you."

His head shoots up and his eyes widen.
So does mine. Why would she choose me?

"What?! A tutor? Why do I need a tutor?!" Timothy exclaims.

"Now now. Calm down. I specifically chose Ellie because I know that you two are very close. I assumed it would be easier for you if someone you knew well helped you." She tries to calm him down. "If you would really like for it to be so, I'll find someone else suited to tutor you."

He looks at me, then at Mrs. Roberts, then at me again.

He sighs.
"I guess she can do it. I still don't think I need a tutor though."

"What do you mean I guess?"
I ask pretending to be offended.

He ignores me and heads out the door.

"Ok then."
I say to myself as I leave too.

"Wait!" She says. "I have a note for both of you to give to your next teacher. There's no need to worry about getting in trouble."

I gladly take the note.
"Thank you!"
I give her a wave as I head out the door and she returns it with a smile.

I run to catch up with Timothy.
"Hey! Wait up!"

He keeps on walking. Completely ignoring me.

"Timothy. Wait!"

He doesn't.
I finally catch up and pull his shoulder to where he's facing me.

"What do you want?!"
He's asks me very rudely.

I'm honestly hurt. He never talks to me that way.
"I just wanted to talk to you. Never mind though. Looks like you're not in the mood."

I brush past him.
I hear him sigh in frustration behind me.

"Ellie wait. I'm sorry. I just- ugh. I don't want a tutor. What will everyone else think? I'll be utterly embarrassed. It has nothing to do with you. I'm actually kind of glad she picked you out of everyone else."

I give him a sympathetic smile.
"It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. And if it'll help, I won't tell anyone about me tutoring you."

He smiles back at me. Gosh that smile kills me every time.
"Thanks Ellie. You're the real MVP."

"Do you want to start studying today or tomorrow?" I ask.

"Might as well start today. Get a head start."

"Come one then. Let's get to class."

He opens the door for me and I walk straight to my Mr. Demi's , my math teacher, desk and hand him the note. He accepts it and tells us to sit down.

I honestly am very happy that Mrs. Roberts picked me to be his tutor and I'm looking forward to spending time with him. I just hope I do a good job and don't screw anything up.
