Emergency

As soon as I get to the steps leading up to my house I can hear yelling and a crash. I rush up the steps to see what's going on, although I already have a pretty good idea as to who's causing the ruckus.

I swing the door open and follow the sound leading into the living room. I see my dad with anger in his drunken eyes, mom crouching fearfully in the corner, and Nate on the floor with a bloody nose.

"What the heck is going on?!" I yell.

Nate swivels his head to face me.
"Get out right now Ellie. You need to leave!" He says loudly.

"No! I won't leave until someone explains. Did you do this dad? How could you?!" I yell furiously at him. He's never done anything violent before and I can't stand to see him do this, especially to my family.

"You heard your brother." He growls at me. "Get out. This is no place for a little girl like you."

I stand there speechless. I'm so terrified. He hurt Nate and possibly even mom. He used to be so kind. He used to love us.
"What happened to you?!" I whisper.
He tightens his fist.

My mom speaks for the first time since I got here.
"Ellie. You heard your brother. You need to leave now. Go to Timothy's. Just get out of the house."

I glance back and forth between mom and Nate.
"I can't. He's- out. Will someone just explain all this? Please?" My voice cracks on the last word and start to cry. I hate for people to see me cry. It makes me seem weak. But I can't help it here.

"I'll explain everything later. I promise. Just please, for your own safety leave. I bet you could call someone to stay with you."
Mom says on the verge of tears herself. But she has a look in her eye. The way she pronounced call. I know what she wants me to do. But I need to do it quickly.

"Ok."

I run out of the house before my dad can do anymore harm.
I run across the street into a large lot of grass. We sometimes use it to play football or ultimate frisbee.
I pull out my phone and quickly dial 911.

It only rings once before someone picks up.
"911 what's your emergency?"

It takes all of what's left of me to answer.
"Um it's my d-dad. He's h-hurting my brother and I he might've hurt my mom. Please h-hurry. Please. I don't know what he'll do next. They're in d-danger."

"Ok it'll all be fine. We're sending police to your house right away. I just need you to tell me your address. Can you do that please?"

"Yes. It's um, 3145 rosebud drive."

"Ok. We'll be there shortly. Just remain calm."

"O-ok."

She hangs up and I'm left alone. That's when I completely break. I fall to my knees and cry. I press my hands into my mouth and scream until my voice is hoarse. I'm so scared. Scared for Nate and my mom. Scared that the police won't arrive in time and my dad will do something horrible. Scared of my dad. And scared of anything and everything that could go wrong.

It isn't long before I can hear sirens. The thought passes through my mind that I should go stand by my house so they know which one it is. But I can't move. My legs are paralyzed. I'm in a deep trance that I can't snap out of.

I barely notice it when two police men walking over to me.

"Miss? Are you alright?"
One of them asks.
I simply nod my head.

"Did he hurt you? Are you injured?"
I shake my head again.

"Do you think you can walk over to your house with us? I promise that everything's being taken care of. You're going to be ok."
