Nate and I are sitting at our round, oak wood table eating the food he prepared when we hear the front door open and close. Not long after mom walks through the door.
"Hey kids!"
She flashes a tired smile at us."Hey mom."
Nate says.
"Why are you home so late? You were supposed to be back an hour and a half ago."Her smile disappears.
"Mmmmm.... What's that smell? Did you cook dinner?"
She walks over to the stove trying to change the subject."Mom."
I say trying to get her attention."Did you both have a good day?"
Somethings obviously bothering her.
Nate and I both sense this and simultaneously stand up and walk over to her. I embrace her in a hug."What's wrong mom?"
She pulls away and sighs, then motions for us to come sit back at the table with her.
"I saw your father today."
There's a pause in the conversation before Nate practically explodes."What?! Why did you do that? He's in jail mom! And for a good reason too! Why on earth would you go back to see that man?"
I am personally shocked by Nate's response, but mom doesn't seem very surprised. She simply looks down at the table. There's a long silence before she speaks.
"I-we...." She sighs once more. A small tear falls down her face.
"I'm filing for a divorce.""Oh mom."
I stand up and go hug her tight. I can't imagine what she's going through right now. Even though I saw this coming, it's still hurts."I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to- to explode like that. I didn't know. I'm sorry."
Nate says.My mom pulls away and drys her tears.
"You don't have to apologize dear. You're reaction was perfectly understandable."
She gives a weak smile."When? When will it be official. Do you get custody?"
I ask."Well we still have to sign papers and go through all the legal stuff. But yes, I will most definitely get custody. No one in their right minds would give you over to him. I'll fight them myself if they try."
She takes our hands in hers.
"We'll stay together. As a family. Always."We all smile. Even through hardships, our family will remain as one. Well, all that remain in this family. But I try not to think that way. Instead, I try and look forward. Onto better things.
"Now."
Mom breaks my thoughts.
"Tell me about your day."Update update update!!!!
