I was sitting out on the front porch of Bag End, on top of a long, wooden bench. I saw Merry headed towards the front gate. He didn't seem to happy. It appeared that something had been bothering him.
When he approached me, Merry stopped and stared at me with tears streaming down his face. "Merry? Is everything alright?" I asked, timidly. Merry let out a loud, exasperated sigh. He opened the front door, entered the hobbit hole, and slammed the door shut. I jumped with fright. I pressed my hand against my chest. My heart was beating rapidly in my chest. I swallowed deeply.
I had wondered what had been troubling Merry. So, I headed inside Bag End and tried to look for him. To my surprise, he was sitting down on the living room couch. His head collapsed in his hands. He was sobbing, loudly
I approached the couch, gingerly. I didn't know if I was capable of cheering Merry up. I stood beside him and waited for him to notice me. "Merry? Merry? Are...are you....alright?" I asked, in a quiet voice.
Merry slowly lifted his head. Teardrops were running down from the tip of his nose. "You don't have to bother with me. This isn't your problem." he grumbled. "I'm better off alone." I didn't understand. "But, I want to stay here with you. I want to make you feel better, Merry. I love you...and...and...you're such a blessing to me...and...I...I..."
Tears had quickly filled up my dark green eyes. I found it difficult to speak. "I...I...want...to...be here for you. Always." Merry sniffled. "Brianna. You..You don't have to do this."
My heart ached. My body trembled. A concerned look was painted on Merry's face. He wiped the tears that were falling from his eyes. "Brianna. Y'all right? What's the matter?" he asked me.
I gazed at the floor and began to weep. I clenched my fist to my mouth, letting out short, airy gasps.
"Bri. What's the matter?" Merry repeated. "What's wrong?" "I'm...I'm..worried." I whimpered. "About what?" "Y-Y-You." I confessed.
Merry sighed, softly. He got up from the couch and walked over towards me. He set his hands upon my shoulders, firmly. "Oh, Brianna. You don't have to worry about me. I'm alright. I'm alright." "But....but....you seemed upset, Merry. I...I...wanted to help you." Merry sighed once more. "Brianna. I'm fine." he whispered in my ear. I felt his warm breath against my neck. "I'm alright. I'm alright."
Merry grabbed a hold of my hand and led me back to the living room couch. He invited me to sit down beside him. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me in close. "You know that I love you. Don't you?" I nervously nodded my head. Tears were still streaming down the crevices of my cheeks. I tried my best to swallow back the pain and sadness.
All of a sudden, Merry embraced me in his loving arms and pulled me closer to his warm body. "I don't like seeing you cry, my angel. It breaks my heart." I sniffled, loudly. "Well...well...seeing...y-y-you cry....." I paused for a brief moment. "B-breaks...m-m-my heart, M-M-Merry." I had drowned into a sea of tears .
Merry patted my back and massaged it in slow, circular motions. "Awww. My angel. Come 'ere." he murmured. "It's alright. It's alright." "Oh, M-M-Merry." I choked.
"Shhh. Shhh." Merry soothed. "Shhh. It's alright." "N-n-no. I-I-It's...it's...." "Shh. Shh. Shh."
"Oh, M-M-Merry. Don't ever let me go." I whimpered. "Please don't let me go."
"I won't." Merry whispered. "I won't." The hobbit leaned forward and planted a kiss on my lips.
