Merry and I were out on a walk through the Shire. We had just came back from the market. It was extremely busy there. I don't really like large crowds; they intimidate me.
Merry had bought a few apples from there. It was hilarious how he managed to fit all of those apples inside his small jacket pocket.
As we were walking, Merry pulled out a shiny red apple from his pocket and offered it to me. I politely accepted it and took a small bite out of it. I wiped away some of the juice on my chin with the corner of my shirt sleeve.
Merry took a huge bite out of his apple. "I don't know why," said Merry, while chewing. "But, I've always loved apples. I remember when I was a young lad growing up in Buckland I found this huge apple tree that wasn't too far from Brandy Hall. Whenever my mother and father were too busy looking after my cousins, I'd run off to that apple tree.
The apples on that tree were enormous! Sometimes they'd fall off the branches by themselves. The first time I tried one of those apples I fell in love with them. I wish that I could go back to Buckland and find that tree. Maybe someday you'd like to come with me and help me find it? Doesn't that sound fun, Brianna?"
I nodded and smiled at him. "Yeah, that does sound like fun." I said, timidly. I took another small bite out of my apple. I noticed that I wasn't eating much of it. The flesh was starting to turn brown. I didn't want to eat the rest of it.
"You're not eating much of your apple, Bri." Said Merry. "What's the matter? Don't like apples?"
"I'm not really a fan of apples." I replied.
"Then, why did you say that you wanted it?" Merry was confused.
"I'm sorry, Merry. I thought that it would be impolite if I didn't accept it. I thought that I'd hurt your feelings if I said no."
Merry started laughing hysterically. "Hurt my feelings? Over an apple? Ha ha ha. Oh, Bri. You could never hurt my feelings. You silly lass. If you want, I could take that apple off your hands."
I looked down at my apple in disgust. The inside of the apple had turned completely brown. "Are you sure that you want to eat this apple, Merry?"
"Yes, I'm sure." Merry chuckled.
"But, it's all brown on the inside." I grimaced.
"I can eat anything!" Merry announced. "Just because it's a bit bruised doesn't mean it's not edible. Here, give it to me."
I slowly handed the apple over to him and watched him bite into the dried out apple. I nearly gagged.
"Mmm. Good apple!" Merry mumbled. After he finished the apple, he threw the rotten core at a nearby tree and the core broke into two pieces.
"I don't understand how he managed to eat that apple and not get sick." I thought. I sighed and shook my head in disbelief.
Merry tightly wrapped his arm around my shoulder as we walked and he gave me a small peck on the cheek. "So, Bri. Whatcha want to do next?" Merry asked me, cheerfully. "You want to hang out with Pippin? That'll lift your spirits up! Then, maybe we can go to the Green Dragon!"
"Sure, we can hang out with Pippin." I smiled. "I'll see about going over to the Green Dragon. As long as you don't order any of that ale. You know what it does to you when you've had too much of it."
"Fine." Merry sighed. "I won't buy any ale. Do you want one?"
I shot Merry a serious look. "I wonder where he got that idea from." I thought to myself. I shook my head at Merry. "No, I'm good. But, thanks for the offer."
"You're welcome!" Merry cheered.
