It was a quiet afternoon. Merry and I were standing in the middle of the living room. Frodo was in his study, reading a book that his Uncle Bilbo had given him. He was gone for quite some time.
Merry and I engaged in a friendly conversation. "Frodo's been gone for quite some time." I said, with a smile on my face. Merry nodded in agreement. "Yes. He has."
All of a sudden, Merry's light blue eyes lit up like two giant lightbulbs. A wide grin grew upon his face. What had gotten into Merry? Why was he acting like this? I was bewildered.
Merry moved in closer to me. He set his hand firmly upon my shoulder. I grew anxious. I gazed at up at him with my wide emerald eyes. "Wha...what are you doing?" I asked, nervously.
Merry traced his index finger along the outline of my cheek. Then, he brushed my hair over my ears. "I love you so much, Brianna." He whispered. I quickly turned away and fixated my gaze on my feet. "I know." I replied, in a soft voice. "I know you do, Merry."
A large lump grew in my throat. All of a sudden Merry took a hold of my hands and pulled me towards him. "Why do you get so nervous around me?" he chuckled. Merry tilted his head.
"I..I...don't know." I replied, timidly. "I don't know." "I see." Merry peered over his shoulder and then looked back at me. "You know, Brianna, since Frodo isn't around....you would like to.....kiss?" My eyes became alert. "Kiss? Are...are you sure that's a good idea?" Merry grinned. "Aye. I think it's a wonderful idea."
All of a sudden, Merry placed his hands upon both of my cheeks and leaned in forward. He pressed his lips upon mine. He kissed me, tenderly and slowly. It...it...took my breath away.
I heard loud footsteps coming from nearby. I was quickly released from Merry's grasp. Merry huffed loudly. "Great. Just great." he muttered, in an irritated tone of voice.
Frodo walked into the living room and approached us. "What have you two been up to?" he asked, politely. A worried expression grew on my face. "Um...nothing?" I stuttered.
Merry grimaced at Frodo. "Right. Nothing."
Frodo noticed that something had been troubling Merry. "What is wrong, Merry?" Merry shook his head. "Nothing. Nothing." Frodo sighed softly and smiled. "Well, then."
The kind hobbit fixated his gaze on me. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder, protectively. "Come along with me, my dear, Brianna." he said, in a soft spoken voice. "It's time for your bath."
Frodo turned around and fixed his gaze upon Merry. "I'm sorry, Merry. I don't mean to leave you all alone. I promise I'll be right back."
Merry shrugged his shoulders and sighed. "It's alright, Frodo. I'll be fine."
While Frodo was guiding me to the bathroom, I peered behind my shoulder and looked back at Merry. He seemed heartbroken and sad.
"I'm sorry." I mouthed at him. "It's alright." Merry mouthed back. I could see that he was holding back a lot of pain. I wish that there was something that I could do. Something. Something. Something.
