Roses

I was standing quietly near the fireplace, trying to keep myself warm and toasty. The living room was filled with a bright orange light. I saw several shadows dancing on the arched ceiling. One of those shadows were mine. I turned away and walked over towards the round living room window. I crouched down and seen a dark silhouette walking up the front porch.

"Who could that be?" I pondered. I rushed over to the front door, with alacrity. I heard a loud knock.

"Hello? Who's there?" I asked, while clutching the brass doorknob.

"It's me! Merry!" An upbeat voice answered.

I gradually opened the door and saw Merry standing with his hands behind his back. His cheeks had turned a bright shade of red. There was a sparkle in the hobbit's curious eyes. I was taken aback for a moment.

I wondered why Merry decided to come here during the evening, when all of the hobbits in the Shire were ready to settle down and fall asleep in their cozy beds. I was still dressed in my white nightgown. I wasn't overly tired, so I decided that I would stay in the living room for a while and stand by the fire until I felt tired enough to head off to bed.

It seems like Merry has a lot of energy in him. He must of been drinking too much ale or smoking too much of that pipe-weed, Old Toby. I know the hobbits are fond of it. But, I'm not. It gives off a putrid aroma. I nearly gagged the first time I've took a whiff of it. One day, I tried telling Merry that smoking and drinking are bad habits, but he didn't care.

"What are you doing here so late, Merry?" I asked, with a nervous smile.

Merry's elf-like ears twitched. "I thought that I would drop by and see you." he answered, jocosely. "What's Frodo up to?"

I shrugged my shoulders. "Frodo is in his study." I replied, quietly.

I remembered that it was almost past my bedtime and Frodo would have wanted me to be in bed. I looked up at Merry and frowned.

"I'm sorry, Merry." I apologized. "I don't think this a good time. I have to rest. I promise that I'll talk to you tomorrow. I'm sorry."

"Come on, Bri." Merry urged. "Please stay. Please. I don't want you to leave. Can't we talk for a while?"

I knew that I could never let Merry down. I loved him. I guess a few minutes couldn't kill me. Frodo is probably still busy. I shot Merry a friendly and compassionate smile.

"Sure, Merry. What did you want to talk to me for?"

"I have a gift for you." Merry smirked. "I'm sure you'll love it, Brianna."

My heart raced with excitement. "What did you get me?" I asked.

Merry got down on one knee and held out a beautiful bouquet of roses. There weren't just red roses, but white roses and yellow roses, too.

"They're so lovely, Merry!" I cheered. "Where did you find these beautiful roses?"

Merry handed me the bouquet and arose from the front porch. I clutched the bouquet of flowers close to my chest. I took a quick whiff of them. The roses had a light, sweet fragrance.
I smiled with delight.

"They're from Sam's garden. I asked him this afternoon if he would gather some roses for me. I told him that they were for you. Sam didn't mind at all. Once Sam had collected all the flowers, he handed them to me and said, "' Ms. Brianna will absolutely love them. Make sure to tell her that they were from my garden.' 'I'll tell her. Thank you, Sam.' I said to him." "'It's no problem at all, Mr. Merry.' said Sam. 'I'm sure that Ms. Brianna will be very happy. She's such a wonderful young lass, isn't she, Mr. Merry?" 'Aye, she is.' I said. 'She is'".

I chuckled, nervously. "Gosh, Merry. That's so sweet of you. Thank you. Thank you so much."

"Brianna, You don't have to thank me. It's the least that I could do for you. You deserve it." Merry smiled. Merry motioned me to come over to him. "Come here, Brianna. I want to see you."

I shook my head, hesitantly. "I don't think it's a good idea, Merry. It's too cold outside and I'm only wearing my nightgown. I might freeze to death."

"Nonsense." replied Merry. He motioned at me once more. "Come over here. I'll keep you warm." Merry stretched his arms out into the air and waited for me to join him.

I walked over towards Merry, reluctantly and stood beside him. I could feel the cold air blow against my feet. I stared at Merry with wide eyes. "Are you sure that this is a good idea, Merry?" I asked, nervously.

All of a sudden, Merry embraced me in his loving arms and he held me close to his body. He rested his chin upon my shoulder and smiled.

"You're so soft," Merry murmured. "And so sweet." I felt him gently poke at my dimples in my cheeks. "I love everything about you."

"I love your dainty little hands..." he said, while lifting my hands and kissing them.

"And your cute little nose...." Merry continued. He placed both of his hands upon my cheeks, leaned forward and pecked my nose.

"Your ears..." Merry planted a kiss on both of my ears.

"Your soft, silky cheeks...." Merry stroked both of my cheeks with his index finger, then kissed them, tenderly.

Merry released and brushed my hair gently over my ears. He chuckled softly to himself. "You're so...adorable."

I managed to conjure up a nervous smile. I found it difficult to stare into Merry's dancing eyes.

Merry cupped my chin and lifted my head up. "Why are you so quiet all of the time?" He asked. "What's going on in that little mind of yours?"
I couldn't come up with a proper response. I chuckled, nervously.

A wide grin grew on Merry's face. "I'm glad that Frodo hasn't taken away your wings, my angel." he said, in a humorous manner. "I don't want you flying off on me."

I shook my head. "I'm not an angel, Merry." I replied, modestly. "I don't even look like one."

Merry clicked his tongue. "Yes, you do. You're the most beautiful lass I've ever laid eyes on. You'll always be an angel to me."

I blushed like mad. I grabbed my bouquet of roses and hid my face behind them. "Thank you, Merry." I murmured.

Merry released me from his arms and lowered the bouquet away from my face. "You don't have to hide from me. I'm not that terrifying, am I?" He teased.

Merry stared deeply into my dark green eyes. It was almost like he was fascinated by them. Mesmerized by them. " I would have given anything to have beautiful eyes like yours. They're so green." Merry chuckled. "They're as green as the woodlands and the meadows in spring."

"That's sweet of you to say that, Merry." I looked behind me and stared at the circular green front door. "Thank you so much for bringing me these roses. They mean so much to me. I should probably head on inside and head off to bed." Huge black bags were growing underneath my eyes. A huge wave of fatigue washed over me. I forced out a loud yawn.

Merry nodded. "Aye, you should. I don't want to keep my precious angel awake all night. No. no. You should get some rest. Good night, Brianna."

"Good night, Merry." I yawned again.

As I walked over to the front door, I heard Merry call out my name. I turned around and noticed that he was smiling back at me. "What is he up to?" I thought.

"By the way, Brianna, I think you look absolutely adorable in that cute little nightgown. It suits you." He teased.

I shook my head and chuckled as I headed on into Bag End.

"Good night, Merry."
