It was a quiet evening in the Shire. Most of the hobbits were heading back home. I was just leaving Bag End. I told Frodo that I was going out for a stroll. Frodo didn't mind. He told me that he was going to finish cleaning up dinner and the dishes. Normally Frodo and I would clean up dinner together, but Frodo said that I deserved to have a little bit of fun.

I was walking down a small dirt road, not far from Bag End. I was looking up at the twilight sky above me and noticed that there were many bright white stars and a golden crescent moon. The stars almost looked like fireflies. I had never encountered any fireflies in the Shire before. I wish that I could've wandered into the woods in search of them; maybe with Frodo.

I heard a cheerful voice call out my name. I turned around and noticed that Merry was running in my direction. His golden curls were flailing around in the air. A wide smile grew upon his face.

"Hello, my lady!" Merry greeted me with a bow. "What are you doing out so late at night?" He teased.

"I was just going out for a walk." I smiled back at him. "I was inside Bag End all day and I really wanted to go outside, but I couldn't because I was afraid that the other hobbits might see me and tease me. I only feel safe when Frodo is with me or when you are with me. I can't go out alone during daylight hours. During the evenings, I'm allowed to go out alone, but I'd rather have someone walk with me in case something happens."

"Do you feel safe with me right now?" Merry asked, politely.

"Yes, I do. I actually feel a lot more comfortable with you around." I answered.

"That's good." said Merry. "You know, Brianna, you don't have to be alone. You need someone like me. Someone who would always be there for you. Someone who loves you and cares about you. You need someone to take care of you. I'd hate to see you get teased by those hobbits. You don't deserve it, Bri."

"I-I know I don't deserve it." I stuttered. "It's not fair."

"No, it certainly isn't." Merry agreed.

"Every time those hobbits see me, they can't help but make fun of me. It hurts. I don't understand what's so wrong about me." I whimpered. "Why do they hate me?"

"I don't know." Replied Merry. "Maybe it's because they aren't used to having humans living in the Shire."

"Probably." I sighed.

"Hey, cheer up now." Merry encouraged. He moved in forward and brushed my silky brown hair over my ears. "I don't want you worrying about them, alright? They don't matter. You shouldn't care about what people think of you."

"I shouldn't?"

"No. Their thoughts and opinions of you don't even matter. I don't care what the other hobbits say about me. I know that they call me a scoundrel and troublemaker, but I don't let any of that stuff get to me. I've got better things to worry about. Like, you. Because you mean the world to me, Brianna. Nobody appreciates your beauty and kindness like I do. You're a wonderful girl and you deserve to be loved. You deserve so much. You deserve me."

"I do deserve you." I blushed. "You're right, Merry. I do deserve to be loved."

I looked down noticed that Merry was holding my hand. He had a firm, but gentle grip on it. I was taken aback for a moment. Then, Merry lifted my hand up and kissed it tenderly.

"I must be the luckiest hobbit in all of the Shire." Said Merry, in a soft voice. "I'd never thought I'd meet a wonderful lass like you."

"I'd never thought I'd meet a wonderful hobbit like you." I said, timidly. My cheeks turned a bright shade of red and my dimples appeared.

"You think I'm wonderful?" Merry asked. "Thank you. I think I'm wonderful, too." He chuckled. "Oh, Brianna. My angel. My love."

I chuckled, nervously. "Oh, Merry. I'm not an angel."

"Course you are." Merry smiled. "You certainly look like an angel. Except that you don't have wings. That's a good thing though because if you had wings then you'd fly away from me and that would make me sad. I don't want to be sad. You wouldn't want me to be sad, would you?"

I shook my head. "No, I don't want you to be sad. I want you to be happy."

"I want you to be happy, too, Bri."

All of a sudden, Merry moved in close and placed his large hands on my shoulders. I looked away, shyly. My heart was beating really fast. There were butterflies in my stomach. This moment with Merry was truly magical and romantic.

"What's the matter, Bri?" asked Merry. "Why are you not looking at me?" He clicked his tongue. "Are you afraid of me?"

"N-no. I'm....I'm not....." I murmured.

Merry placed his index finger on my lips. "Shh, shh, shh." He soothed. All of a sudden, Merry placed his hands on my cheeks and kissed me, tenderly. The kiss was small, but affectionate. I felt as if I was placed under some sort of magic spell. I couldn't speak.

"Your lips are soft." Merry smiled. "Soft and sweet and delicate, just like you."

I chuckled, nervously. "I-I-I don't know what to say, Merry. I really don't."

"It's fine, Bri." Merry chuckled as well. "Erm, anyway, I have to go back home. It's getting late. You should probably head back home, too. Maybe get some rest?"

"Yeah, yeah. That sounds like a good idea." I nodded.

"Hey, I'll be coming over to Bag End tomorrow for Afternoon Tea. I guess I'll see you then. Have a good night, Brianna. Sweet dreams."

"Thank you, Merry. Good night."

Merry and I hugged each other tightly and then we both headed off in separate directions. Merry was walking back to his home in Buckland and I was making my way back to Bag End.

It was really nice to see Merry again. I couldn't wait to see him again tomorrow.
