Me, Kaiti, and Merlin sat around a campfire discussing what we were going to do about Cai. Kaiti was suggesting that we go and look in the nearest town, about 3 miles away. The logs we sat on were soaked, but so much more was lost. We sat their, saved from getting frostbite from the meek fire between us. I was too distraught to keep up more than a few flames. I looked over at Kaiti, hoping to see some hope in her eyes. Her eyes were swollen in tears, their trails still glistening on her cheek. I moved over to help ease her guilt, but she scooted away from me. My heart broke as I saw the fear in her eyes. Just from looking at her, I could see so much pain, so much misery. I went to talk to Merlin, as he was barely functioning. He hadn't talked since the wave hit, where he hasn't even seemed "all there". I snapped my fingers, but he seemed out of it. He hasn't moved himself yet, as we had carried him there. Before we could even go anywhere, he had to wake up from whatever happened to him.
"You go, to get Cai. I can watch him, and Cai would probably get angry if I came, being the one that hurt him." I was about to contradict that he wouldn't hate her, but she had slipped back into her mask of misery. I started packing up the little supplies we had gathered that did not wash away. I grabbed the "pack of leaves and other odd assortments and walked north.
I was breathing heavily, having ran the whole way to the town. I stopped running when I reached a sign that read "Cortus- Next Right". I walked into the town, looking as if I lived in the wild. Realizing that it would give me away as not normal, I walked back into the woods. I went along the woods line, looking for a house that seemed empty. Feeling sorry, but having no other choice, I broke in. I tried to reduce the damage by not breaking anything. I went upstairs to see if they had any boy's clothes. The first three doors I opened were immediately obvious that they belonged to girls. The fourth door was a guys. I went in and began to rummage for clothes. Finding no dresser, I looked around for any other kind of storage. Finding no such thing, I was forced to scour around his personal belongings. Although I tried to focus on my task, I learned he was my age. He played soccer, and loved to draw. I saw countless papers full of scribbles, each one of something mystical or magical. I soon found a rolled up pair of khakis buried under a pile of centaur drawings. I changed into them, then began to search for a shirt. As I had shorts now, I could probably go out, but I was still worried. Moving onto a pile of dragons, I looked for anything that looked even closely to normal. I found a green shirt at the bottom of it. I grabbed it and began to head for the door before anyone came home. As I reached for the handle, it shook.
I slipped behind a pile of papers and crawled towards his bed. He came in just as my foot went under finally. He walked in and jumped onto his bed. The springs creaked loudly above me as he laid down. I stayed stiff for several hours before he got off. As his feet hit the ground right in front of my face, a book dropped down in front of my face, letting out a plume of dust. I felt my nose begin to tickle. I sneezed, but thankfully he had started using an mp3 without me noticing. He looked like he just discounted it as some weird technical glitch. I was about to relax again when I noticed where I sneezed was smoking. I imagined it dying out, but it still lit. I tried again, knowing I was fire-proof. As I opened my eyes again, my skin caught fire. I rolled out, putting out the flame in the process. The guy stood right in front of my head, his eyes as big as saucers. I began to explain, but then the fire re-caught my attention from the corner of my eyes. He picked me up as he saw the flame. I focused my mind on it one more time, and it sputtered and went out. The guy was looking at me weird, and he linked my gaze to the fire sputtering out. I stood up quickly, moving for the window instead of the door. I needed something faster than stairs. I jumped though the window, shirt still in my hand. As I heard glass shatter around me, the guy leaped after me too. I hit the ground running, him not as lucky. I heard his leg break, thankfulness passing though me that I was able to stand such a landing. Just before I made it to the woods, I heard a screen door open. I then ran as fast as I could.
I waited until the next day before I went into town. I had some chestnuts that I had packed earlier, and drank from the stream beside me. Thinking of Merlin and Kaiti, I walked into town. Just as I walked by a blue house, a woman jumped out and yelled about witchery. Figuring it was a good place to start, I knocked on the door. A man opened the door, his face hopeful. When he saw me his face fell, but he asked me what I wanted.
"I'm looking for a friend of mine, are you housing any strangers from the past several days?"
He looked scared and ran upstairs, leaving the door open. I walked in and ran after him. I heard muttering sounds behind a door, so I walked in. Upon seeing Cai, I went over to see how he was doing.
