Isn't This Exactly Where You'd Like Me?

"Crap!" Iggy shot back from you and hit his head on the underneath of the desk as he tried to get up.

You regained your composure and stood up. "Was that Angel?"

"Yes. Something's wrong, we gotta go!" Iggy grabbed your hand and pulled you out the door. You quickly glanced around to make sure nobody was coming. You ran in front of Iggy and took the lead, pulling him along towards the basement door where you saw the kids running towards it as well.

Nudge pulled on Iggys arm. "Guys wait, we need a plan! We don't know whats down there!"

"We don't really have time for that. The next bell will ring any minute now! We have to be down there before it does!"

"We'll duck inside the door and then make a quick plan."

"I brought bombs!" Gazzy offered.

"We cant bomb a school Gazz. Especially if Max and Fang are still in it!" Angel snapped. She opened the basement door and slid in, closing it again when everyone was in. You were all plunged into darkness and it took a few seconds for your eyes to adjust. The first thing you saw was a faint light glowing from the room at the bottom of the stairs.

You told Iggy how many stairs there were and the length of the stairwell.

"OK, literally anything could be down there. What do we do?"  Nudge whispered.

You all looked at Iggy. "Were all looking at you, Igg." You told him.

"Why are you looking at the blind kid? I don't know whats down there any more than you guys do!"

You butt in, "Let's just admit we don't have a plan and get down there! Just be prepared to fight. Gazzy, how powerful are those bombs?"

"Powerful enough to make a hole in a four foot thick concrete wall." Gazzy responded.

"Keep them handy," You told him, "just in case."

There was a shuffling noise from below and all of you stood at attention, listening intently. After a few minutes of silence, you quietly descended the stairs first, keeping the kids behind you.

You cautiously entered the dimly lit room, seeing nothing at first, and then you spotted Max and Fang, who looked like they were passed out, bound and gagged in chairs. Scanning the rest of the room, you saw nobody else. You stepped further into the room, everyone else entering behind you.

Angel ran over to Max and Fang before you could shout out a warning and the door behind you clicked shut. You whirled around but saw nobody there. "Hello, children." The low, purring voice filled the room and you couldn't tell where it was coming from. Immediately, you got into fighting stance and Angel tugged at the chords binding Max and Fang to no avail.

"I can't pick up on its thoughts!" Angel said, frustrated.

"Oh indeed." The voice said calmly, "I am very aware of your little 'talent'. In fact, I'm quite informed of all of your kids' abilities. The internet is very handy, huh? Except..." There was a flash of color and then, in front of you stood what looked like a Human/Acinonyx hybrid.

He had faded spots on his skin and black lines running from his eyes to the corners of his mouth. He was bald and his eyes were amber and round. His legs were long and thin and his stomach receded unnaturally back towards his spine. There was something unnatural about his shoulders as well.

"I cant seem to find any information on you. Just the fact that you are the first human/avian hybrid. I guess you won't be too much trouble." The corner of his mouth twitched up in a small smirk and you felt the blood rising to your cheeks at the sly insult. "As for the blind one, well, i'm wondering why they let you live after their failure."

Iggy clenched his fists and his jaw tightened. 'Don't do anything guys. I'm going to try to 'talk' to him.' You didn't show any emotion as Angels voice filled your thoughts.

'Just be careful.' You thought back to her.

"What's your name?" Angel took a step towards the man and, in a flash, he was within a foot of her. Angel did not show anything but bravery as she looked him in the eyes, crossed her little arms, and opened her mouth.

But before she could utter a single syllable, she collapsed to the ground. "Angel!" Gazzy ran to his sister, and collapsed as well. He dissapeared and came back carrying Nudge's dark form, who must have been trying to sneak up on him, and dropped her next to the other two. The man turned to you and Iggy with a smile. "Whoops. Looks like the little kiddies are taking a little nap."
