Chapter 29

A/N: So, to be honest I am not sure if this chapter will be long or not so I guess we will see how it goes!

The doctor came out to Nathan and I, saying that Haley was getting ready to have surgery.

"The baby..." Nathan cried, "Is the baby gonna be okay?"

The doctor shook his head, "We don't know yet. Right now, our priority is saving your wife. We are doing everything that we can."

I clenched my jaw as the doctor retreated away. I was having so much anger build up inside of me, and I couldn't hold it in anymore. I turned to Nathan. "It was Donte..." I said, "The one who hit her. It was Donte, wasn't it."

He nodded and looked at the ground. I licked my lips and bit my lip before grabbing him and thrusting him against the wall. "I told you NOT to get her involved, Nate!" I yelled, sending a fist through his jaw, "I asked you one thing!" I cried.

That's when a pair of hands were placed on my shoulders and guided me away from Nathan. Brooke had tears in her eyes, just like me. I looked down at Nathan as he just laid there and took it. I shook my head and walked away.

"Hey, baby..." Brooke cried, "Baby... look at me, okay? Talk to me. Tell me something about you and Haley?" she said, forcing us to sit down.

I managed out a smirk when I took off my necklace and played with it. "When we were coming back to Tree Hill, Haley made me promise that I would try something new. That's when she gave me this small basketball necklace with my number engraved on it... She wanted basketball to be my new thing." I smiled more, replaying the moment. "She said I deserved it just as much as anyone else out there... She said she was proud of me." My voice cracked as my head fell into my hands.

"Haley is proud of you..." Brooke breathed.

"She has to make it through this, Brooke. She has to. Her and the baby..."

I sat in the church just praying and crying to whoever was listening. Nathan ended up joining and I instantly felt guilty for earlier. "Nathan...I..-"

He shook his head and cut me off, "It's okay... I probably would have done the same thing." he sighed and took a spot next to me. We ended up crying together and using each other for strength.

Nathan left to go talk to Haley, even though she wasn't awake yet. Brooke then joined with perfect timing. "Hey," she smirked, "I brought you a change of clothes... some food... and me, because I'm gonna be here, okay?"

In that moment, I fell even harder for her than I could have ever imagine. I leaned in and gave her a kiss and said, "I love you."

She smiled back, not saying anything. To my surprise, it didn't hurt that she hasn't said it to me yet because she has to get there... she's been betrayed by so many loved ones and it was going to take some time. I knew she loved me, her heart just had to catch up.

I walked in to see Nathan still with Haley. He motions for me to join and so I did. "I was going to go to the church... to do something I guess." Nathan said, "I didn't want her alone in case she woke up."

I sighed, and took her hand into my own. "Hey Hales," I started, "I don't know if you can even hear me right now but... I need to say this, okay? I love you... so much. I don't say it as much as I need to and I can't even remember the last time I said it before this happened... But you can't leave me, okay? Show me that you are always here and open those eyes, or squeeze my hand, or make a sly comment about Brooke... I don't care just something." I cried, letting my head fall when she did nothing in return.

"Why isn't Brooke taking care of my baby brother..." I heard her speak.

I looked up to see her tired eyes open as she tried smiling. I could't help but laugh and smile as I placed a kiss on her forehead and then ran to Nathan.

"Nathan!" I said, getting his attention, "It's Haley... She's awake." I smiled.
