Chapter 28

It was game day. The bus was quiet except for a few whispers among the guys in the back. I sat next to Skills this ride instead of being alone.

"Check this out... I have 3 college scouts that are gonna be at the game tonight. We win? I'll have my pick of scholarships! Heck, maybe they'll even like something you show 'em too!" Skills said, placing headphones in his ears.

In the locker room I stood with Lucas and Skills talking about the game.

"Nate's gonna throw the game tonight. We can't let him." Lucas said.

"How do you suppose we do that?" Skills asked.

"We have to freeze out Nathan..." I sighed, turning to Lucas for us to take our pills.

We took out the correct amount of pills and then shared a glance. "This one night, let's go all the way. Only this once." I said.

Lucas nodded and we took half of our heart medication instead of the full dosage.

It was getting closer to tip off, but during pre-game I had noticed that Haley, Brooke, Rachel and Peyton were not with the other cheerleaders. "Nate... where's Haley?" I asked.

He shrugged and I saw the concern spread on his face. I shook it off... We had to. I made glances with Lucas and Skills, and before I knew it the game was underway.

It seemed as though every time Nathan got the ball, he made a turnover. We were trailing by 10 at this point and Lucas was taken out. Not long after, Skills and Nathan had gotten into a battle and began pushing each other. I held Nathan back while Lucas held back Skills. By the time the clock started up again, it was half time.

Whitey stood before us, playing the recording of the last time the Ravens were in the championship.

"This is your guys' last chance to do something great and as a team. It will stay with you for the rest of your lives." Whitey boomed.

We took the court again and something inside Nathan sparked because he came out on fire the second half. "Are you guys going to help me win this game or what?" Nathan smirked.

We were going back and forth a bit and as I went up to take a shot I had my legs swooped from underneath me. I landed right on my back but a hand had reached down to help me. I assumed it was one of their players, but my eyes met theirs and I was wrong.

"Are you okay?" Brooke asked.

I smirked, "I love you, Brooke. Of course I'm okay..." I said, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek before taking my spot on the line.

I made both of my free throws and we were now down by two points. We managed to keep them from scoring again and called time out with 23 seconds left on the clock. Lucas was brought back in and it was time to win this thing.

"It doesn't mean anything if you don't make the shot." Lucas said.

"Sounds familiar." Nathan smiled, nodding in my direction.

Lucas passed the ball over to Skills to start the clock, and Skills passed it over to me. I dribbled around a bit, trying to get open or help the others.

10 seconds.

I passed it over to Lucas again, who sent it to Skills.

5 seconds.

Nathan received the ball and took it inside to tie the game!

2 seconds.

He launched it back to Lucas who was behind the arc. Lucas sent the ball into the air.

The buzzer went off. Ravens win!

The crowd erupted louder than it ever had throughout the entire season. Nathan and I stormed Lucas, exchanging hugs and smiles and everything. Brooke ran over to me and gave me a long hug, then did the same with Lucas.

"It's a dream come true!" She smiled, "So, who do you want standing next to ya?" she said, motioning towards Peyton.

He laughed and looked in Peyton's direction, then back to Brooke. "Who do you?" he said, motioning towards me before going to Peyton.

We laughed and looked at each other yet again, only this time it was different. "You're standing next to me." she said. Before I could reply, she pressed her lips to mine.

Obviously, I smiled into the kiss and pulled her closer. It was long, and full of emotion. It was everything I expected it to be and more.

After the game there was a big celebration at Karen's. I had arrived with Brooke, but found myself talking to Haley.

"So, you're okay right? The both of you?" I asked.

"Yes, Toby, for the 100th time! Me... and your nephew are okay." She smirked.

"Nephew..." I breathed, "It's a boy." I smiled, engulfing her into a hug.

"So," She said, nodding in Brooke's direction, "Worked out for ya, huh?"

I smiled and turned to see Brooke already smiling at me, "Yeah... it sure did."

Haley and Nathan left, as did Brooke and Rachel. Obviously, I was given a goodbye kiss first.

"I'll come by later, okay?" She said.

I nodded and gave her another kiss as she left. A few moments later I heard a lot of noise coming from outside so I ran out to see what had happen. I wished this was some nightmare I could wake up from... Haley had been hit and she wasn't talking to us. Lucas called 911 as Nathan stormed after the car who hit her. I stayed by her side, cradling her until the EMS people got here. As if things couldn't have gotten any worse or any more scary, Lucas fainted.

We got to the hospital quickly. Nathan and I were left in the waiting room with no answers. I took a deep breath and dialed Brooke's number with trembling hands.

"Miss me already?" she joked.

"Brooke..." my voice cracked, "Haley and Lucas..." I stuttered.

"Tobin... hey what's going on? Where are you?"

"It's bad Brooke, it's really bad." I cried.
