1.6.17 AMACon4: Day 5 –Prompt – EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLE

The Door

Argh! Where is she?!

Richard roamed his eyes at the marketplace; it's noon, the sun's heat is biting to the skin. He pulled his backpack to get his bottled water inside and gulped down to quench his thirst. He left more than half for Maine. I have no idea where she's from but by the looks of her outfit earlier, she must have been drag in here too...by that mesmerizing door.

It was supposed to be a non-eventful Sunday for Richard and his friends. They just want to take a tour around the newly re-furnished National Museum since it's free and it's a university requirement to fulfill before the semester ends. They already planned where they'll go after the short visit.

But no, the plan will not be going there now for him, since out of curiosity, Richard decided to stay at the large room, on the second floor of the museum where a magnificent door was on displayed. He remembers reading the title of the display out loud earlier, "Dimension"

Yeah, right. This is a dimension. A different dimension??

When he touched the door, where there is a clear instruction that reads, "Don't touch", something happened. And now, here he is, in a middle of a street he don't know. He arrives with her beside him, both of them in shock.

Who are you? He asked

Where am I? She asked

It was then that men in hooded red coat come near them, grab their arms and wants to take them somewhere. They fought back of course. At that time, he was glad he knew some fighting techniques, he managed to dislodge himself.

But, she was not. He tried to help her. He kicks the red coated men, punched some and tried to hold her hands to get to her. She shouts, "Help!" Her fear seems to give him strength because he managed to free her in one strong side kick to the man that holds her captive.

Richard holds her hand. They run in the middle of that marketplace. "I am Richard, what's your name?" he said, a bit breathless.

He waited for her answer, it did not come quick enough when suddenly, there are too many people around the place as if a bell had rung and they quickly need to go somewhere. In the midst of that sea of people, their hands got separated and she shouted, "My name is Maine!"

"Maine! Maine! Maine!" he shouted back, takes few steps to get to her but it was of no use. There are just too many people! Argh! If I just hold her firmly then we would never have been separated.

Now, the street was deserted. This place confuses him. It looks like a place in the Philippines but at the same time not. The people did not response no matter how much he asked around. He'd like to think that it was only because they can't understand him.

Richard sighs, his backpack was at one side of his shoulder while his hand was on his waist. Where to look? Where are you, Maine?

"Richard?"

His body stiffened. He heard her voice. Maine? That's her! Where are you?!

"Richard, where are you?"

Another whisper, but this time, he knows where to look. He has no idea how but he just do. This is crazy! He run as fast as he could. She's at the small building beside the meat shop, they kept her in a room full of mirrors? Why is that?

Richard saves his question later, he need to get to Maine and that's what he'll do.

Maine woke up in a room full of mirrors. She felt dizzy and weak. There are empty chairs at empty tables around but she sits at the center of the room. The floor below her is elevated, like a small stage, she sits at the only red chair. There was no one in the room and nothing binds her. She don't know the reason she was brought there and don't care, as of now, the only thing she cared about is how to get out.

She remembers the man she was with at the marketplace. "Richard" she said as she tried to stand up. Her weak knee almost gave out, she grips the chair for support and finally able to stand. "Richard, where are you?"

"Where is this place?" She muttered. She walks around the room to find a door or at least a window, but it was just all mirrors.

"One of these mirrors are probably the door..." she looked down on the floor, "Or a trapdoor perhaps?" she inspected the floor. Tapping it with her foot, listening to a hollow sound. A couple of minute passed but she found nothing.

Maine grew tired and decided to rest for a while, "I'll find the way out no matter what!" she gritted her teeth in determination.

Just then, a loud bang was heard, shouts and more bang. She was startled when the chair that she was sitting earlier got thrown out because the floor where it was place has opened.

That's the trapdoor?!

Richard's head comes out from below along with his body of course. "Maine!" he stretched his hand out to her. "Come!"

She smiled at him. In all her life, she has never been so happy to see a particular person. Richard's appearance just made him that person for her. She grinned, clasps his out-stretched hands and grasps it firmly.

He smiled, she only noticed then the dimple on his left cheek, her heart accelerated as he said, "Don't let go"

"I won't" she answered.

Richard circled his arms around her and they both sunk back from the trapdoor, then in an instant, their back at the museum. In the middle of the room, in front of the "Dimension" door.

On where they've come from, the men in red coats only saw empty chairs at empty tables. And nothing more.
