Roan Black - Twelve

Chapter Twelve

Roan returned to his cabin twenty minutes later, clutching the picture in his hand. He looked around, but didn't see Aubrey anywhere. "Where's Aubrey?" He asked Drake when he saw him entering the living room carrying a sandwich.

"Poor girl when back to sleep. I just checked on her." Drake said, sitting in the chair. He noticed his brother clenching something in his hand and couldn't stop his curiosity. "What's that?" Drake noticed Roan's body immediately tense at the question and frowned.

Roan looked towards his bedroom, used his sensitive hearing to listen and when he could hear Aubrey still breathing evenly he handed the picture to Drake. Roan could only nod his agreement when he heard his brother curse under his breath. "That's not the worst part. Look at the back."

Drake immediately flipped the picture and frowned. "How dare you betray me? I'll make sure to remind you of your place?" He muttered, "what the hell does this even mean?"

Roan shook his head, "I have no idea, but it's obvious that Raven's mind has become even more twisted. Drake, if Audrey's right, Raven's been following her for more than three months."

"What the hell does he want with her? Raven's a twisted and sick bastard, but he doesn't do this. Are we positive it's the same person?"

Roan had thought about that same question and no matter how much he wanted to say it wasn't, it was just too much of a coincidence that Raven was in the are and that his scent was in Audrey's cabin. "I believe it is. I think Raven's-" The words were nauseating to say and left Roan feeling possessive to the point of aggression. "I think Raven's in love with Audrey... In some sick way, he's put a claim on her."

"That's impossible. He can't claim her." Drake shook his head. "His mate died..."

Roan nodded, "she did, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't find himself content with another. With his mind warped the way it is, it wouldn't surprise me anymore as much as it pisses me off to admit."

"What are you going to do about Audrey?" Drake asked, continuing when Roan gave him questioning look. "I took the time to read her when I checked in on her. She's confused, about you."

"What do you mean she's confused?" Roan didn't mean to growl, but the fact that his brother had read his mate and knowing she was confused about him wasn't exactly what he'd hoped to hear.

"You've popped into her life, awakened something she's never felt before and as she battles with her own overwhelming feelings she feels that you're unfazed by what you two have shared. She's feeling a bit insecure and you running away isn't helping the situation."

Roan ran a frustrated hand down his face, "damn it."

"Why do you run away this time? The first time, she understands, because I was calling you, but this time..." Drake trailed off.

"I couldn't... if I stayed in that room with her in my bed, I wouldn't have been able to stop myself. I had enough problem when we were out in the open. You saved me from biting her when you called. I wasn't in control and I find that whenever I'm with her control is hard to keep."

Drake leaned back, nearly blown away by his brothers admission. Roan was known for his control. People counted on it, but to hear that one woman could make him lose it all was nearly unbelievable. "Wow..." He muttered, unable to express his feelings.

"Tell me about it. I'm so used to always being in control. I knew what a mate could do, but I didn't realize..." Roan laughed. "I guess no one really knows until they've found their mate, huh?" Roan had seen his parents together, how in love, how consumed they were in each other. Even after all these millennia together, they still mooned over each other. Would he and Audrey be that way, he wondered. He supposed he shouldn't think too much into the future, he still had to convince Audrey that they were perfect for each other and keep her safe from Raven. "Regardless, Audrey can't know what I am, or who, at least not yet."
