The problem with being a theoretical writer in fanfic is that you're always theorizing. Even though second season has come and gone, and I thought some of my theories were nixed, they're not.
Keith and Shiro as brothers.
Keith says Shiro is like a brother to him, so they are brothers. There is no romantic relationship between the two. However, the word "like" implies they aren't blood related. However, this "like" came from Keith, whose the younger of the two, and not from Shiro's perspective. When I watched the episode where Keith's father shows up, my first thought was that Keith looked more like Shiro than he did his father, but the light coming from outside distorted the colors. Both Shiro and Keith look like they cold be related to the man.
So, they could be cousins, with the man being Shiro's uncle through is mother's side. They could also share the same father, but have different mothers. Or, they do have the same mother, and Shiro didn't know about the blade due to being separated from his younger brother at a point in time, the separation of which led to Keith not recognizing Shiro as his brother, and with Keith's personality, Shiro wouldn't push the issue, settling on Keith thinking of him "like" a brother. However, if this is the case, the whole Keith being Galra will have thrown him for a loop making him think they are half-brothers, thus explaining a lot, but be fine with it. He doesn't realize he to is Galra, which might explain why they attached a Galra arm to him. Or, he knows, and doesn't want to say anything to Keith, focusing instead on Keith becoming leader if something happens to him.
As for Shiro, he doen't act like Keith is "like" a brother, but instead acts like they "are" brothers. The two don't have to be blood related for him to think this way though, but it definitely shows a difference in opinions between the two. There is a ton of potential here, and it is fun to play with Keith's mind.
Keith is Galra
So, that's canon fact. The staff says so.
But, I have been asking questions, like what the connection between the Alteans and Galra actually is, and if there are one of two possibilities. They're actually the same species that developed differently on two different planets – going back to the Vulcan and Romulan theory, or that the tech – and thus the knives – are keyed into Altean DNA. Both theories aren't likely, the first being more likely than the second, but they're going to be fun theories to work with. As I said, it's fun to play with Keith's mind.
