I came across a theory which suggests the eighth season was originally supposed to include Lotor returning, him getting redeemed and Allura walking off into the sunset with Lotor at the end and that it was supposed to be Lotor's sacrifice. The problem is, we have the exact same problems with that scenario. Well, except for the fact we don't have the creepy scenario with Lance raising Allura that LM suggested. Actually, if that was supposed to happen in both versions then it's the exact same problem.
In the end Allura still dies, and if you die you still don't get a happy ending, but this may be worse in the fact she's not sacrificing herself to save the universe. She's sacrificing herself for a guy. A guy I might add here who experimented on her people and sucked them dry of their lifeforce, but we've still got the question of whether Allura was really in love with Lotor, or if she was looking for something – anything – to feel as if she were loved.
On top of this would the whole Lotor scenario even happen if Keith had stuck around? The answer is no, but we've also got the issue of why Keith didn't stick around after Lotor joined their side. He's still off on Blade of Marmora missions despite the fact it makes more sense for the blades to have someone keeping an eye on Lotor, but we never got the promised resolution for Keith almost killing himself. Even taking Keith out, why did Allura fall for Lotor and was it really love?
Or was she thinking this would be the only way to continue the Altean race as getting together with Coran – her father figure – would be just plain weird? She's also given a guilt trip regarding Lance and his feelings now. And anybody else noticing that walking into the light is what happened at the end of the Legend of Korra?
The most important part is Allura is supposed to be a strong female. Even if she had fallen in love with Lotor, what he did would make her fall out of love. Nothing he did would make up for what made her fall out of love, and they could possibly be friends, but this idea she would end up with him? We've got the same issue – the push of misogynistic values being personified by the ships involved.
Oh, and if Keith was supposed to die instead of Lotor rescuing him wouldn't that make Lotor a rebound from Keith and Lotor taking advantage of Keith's death to get with Allura? And to think, the very next season is when a bunch of the writers started quiting, but – can I add here there could have been a different way to handle Keith and Shiro than Keith taking off, or at least taking off for as long as he did?
