How do I feel about making one of the girls from BSC an LGBT character?
Surprisingly, the articles I've read on the matter – having only watched one episode so far – indicate LGBT matter is being handled well. Not surprising given the fact one of the producers is LGBT. Oh, wait – that's Ann M. Martin who came out as LGBT four years ago.
The question though is whether or not one of the girls should be LGBT, and my answer is I don't like the idea of fans arguing over which character should be LGBT. More specifically, I'm shocked none of them have stopped and asked if that is what Ann M. Martin herself wants – if that is how she sees her own characters. Mind you, she did write during a time that she couldn't openly create an LGBT character in a given work, but that – and the fact she's LGBT – doesn't mean that is the way she sees the character.
However, if it does happen – because she is a producer, I'll be happy with the move. In truth, I'd be far happier than some of the other series out there changing specifics about the characters which don't ever get the writer's input regarding such changes, something which would never happen in professional theater.
Actually, what floors me is none of the fans voicing that they want one of the girls to be LGBT have stopped and asked what she wants, almost as if they're thinking of her as long gone and dead.
