~Mila~
When we rushed downstairs the first thing I saw was Kate holding a heavily bleeding Carmine.
Liam walked up to the stairs. ‘Rogues came out of nowhere, there were more than we anticipated. They took Harding with them and only targeted Carmine for some reason. We were able to fight them off but Carmine is in really bad shape.
Kate looked at me while holding Carmine. She was truly hurt I could see it in her eyes. Her long blonde curls were stained with his blood. That was the moment I knew and I ran back upstairs. ‘Mila, where are you going?’ Asher asked me. ‘To get some answers. Carmine is Kate’s mate, don’t you see the resemblance between the Luna and Kate?’
I felt stupid for not seeing it instantly. I mean, how many times have I looked into Kate’s grey eyes and combed her hair when we were just little girls. After I told Asher I ran back upstairs and closed the door behind me.
There were several enforcers in the room to make sure no one disturbed the alpha and Conner was in here to working with all sorts of tubes and bags.
‘Luna Tara, I need to speak with you in private. I have a few questions to ask you.’ I said.
‘I have no secrets, ask away.’ Tara said to me with an inviting smile.
‘Do you and Alpha Preston have a daughter?’ I asked bluntly. There was no time for subtlety, although that had never been my strong suit.
I saw her eyes tear up. ‘Yes, she was my only child. I am Grants true mate but he had been married before and they had Harding. Casey was taken from us many years ago when she was just an infant and we haven’t found any trace of her thus far. Why do you ask?’
‘Because I believe that my best friend might be that daughter, that’s why you looked so familiar to me, you two look much alike.’ I answered. ‘Harding got away with help from many rogues but before they left they attacked one of our enforcers, Carmine is Kate’s mate. It would explain why he was their only target if Harding recognized her.’
Tara stood up and said. ‘Please guide me to her.’
I opened the door and there stood Asher with several enforcers. He smiled at me. ‘You might be right Mila.’ Then he looked at his enforcers. ‘Stay here and guard the alpha.’
When we came down the hallway was empty. ‘They are at the pack hospital.’ Asher said and took my hand. Sparks erupted and I felt all warm and tingly inside.
We walked in and I immediately saw Kate sitting near Carmine’s bed, they were working on him. Tears were evident in her eyes.
She looked up at me and I nodded to her to come to us. Reluctantly she left his bed and walked up to us. ‘Why would they do that to him?’ She asked me, I could hear her heartache clearly in her tone.
Tara spoke. ‘I think that has to do with me and my family.’ She walked up to Kate and examined her meticulously.
‘Excuse me dear.’ She said and pushed Kate’s hair of the way to look at a marking on her neck. Her gasp for air was enough for me to know that Kate was indeed the Casey Tara spoke so lovingly off several minutes ago.
She let go of Kate’s hair and enveloped her in a motherly hug.
‘My daughter.’ She whispered but us being wolves we all heard her.
She let go of Kate and said. ‘We have a lot to talk about, would you mind if we left your mate in the capable hands of the doctors and enforcers and chat for a bit? We will be back before you know it.’
