~Mila~
It felt good to actually say the name of my father. But I didn’t anticipate the look of pure shock on Ashers face. He usually seemed very composed.
‘Asher, what is wrong?’ I mind linked him. This mind linking thing really came in handy when talking about private things. There was no real noise or shouting going on in a mansion filled with people. It felt very peaceful.
He didn’t reply but he came down the stairs and towards me.
We walked to a nearby den and sat down.
‘Are you sure about this Mila? To my recollection the Darklight pack Alpha had no offspring.’
Now I understood his confusion and I was thankful that Asher apparently knew more about my biological father than I did. ‘Does that mean you have heard of him?’
He chuckled. ‘The better question is who hasn’t heard of him. The man was a legend in his time and remains that until this day. All young pups want to be like him when they grow up.’
I felt a sort of pride for the man who fathered me but who I never got to know.
‘And why is that? Because I only know his name and status.’
I figured my mother didn’t want to reminisce about her true love with James and who could blame her. Just the thought of having to lose Asher sent a searing hot pain through my chest.
But that did result in me not having any clue who my real father is.
Asher smiled and said. ‘I will tell you all I know and that happens to be a lot more than other wolves can tell you.’
I was confused because he didn’t seem cocky about that. He was simply stating a fact. ‘Why is that?’
‘Ever since I was a little pup I have been trained to become an Alpha. Knowing other packs genealogy is an essential part of that job. It helps with pack politics, makes me more able to identify pack members who come across our lands and it has got many other benefits I won’t bore you with right now. The Darklight pack is still in existence only nowadays they are a select group of highly skilled fighters. My best fighter won’t stand a chance against one of their novice fighters. Your father was the best of them.
As you know we have a large pack. We have Maryland, Virginia, West-Virginia and North and South Carolina. The borders of those states are also our pack borders.
When he was in charge of his pack his territory actually bordered our western border and included Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.’
He paused to look at me and I realized something. ‘But that is rogue territory, where is the pack now?’
‘Well, that’s the admirable thing about this whole story. Since there was no successor and the pack did not accept the pack that defeated their alpha most of the pack dispersed. They were able to do so because there was no alpha challenging their leader but an ambush with thirty attackers all bent on taking out one man. Your father was overrun by sheer numbers and definitely not tact, strength or superior fighting. Before he died he managed to take out twenty five of Grey Paws best pack enforcers. That is just unheard of.
He became a legend because he was a great leader. Not just strong but loving and kind, he was a superior alpha in any way and the pack truly prospered under his skillful leadership. His pack loved him so much that through their grief they were not able to find a leader suitable enough to follow in his footsteps. So some became rogue and others came to our pack to find solace here. The pack lands became and remained rogue territory because Alpha Evans group of warriors fight anyone trying to claim those lands and you don’t want to mess them unless you have a death wish.
