You loved days like these, spending time outside in your backyard with your husband; Jackson and four year old son Noah. Noah was just showing you how easy it was to be a plane... yes a plane. You and Jackson had asked him curiously what he wanted to be when he grew up, but with that wild imagination of his he said a plane. You laughed at his response and so you asked; "Do you mean a pilot sweetheart, like the ones who fly the plane?"
He gave you a confused look and seriously told you, "No mommy a plane, you know like this." Noah spread his arms and ran around making 'plane' sounds. You looked over at Jackson and saw a smile spread across his face.
"Come here silly." You stood up chuckling and grabbed him, hugging him tightly and circling around with him in your arms. You carried him to were you and Jackson were sitting on the floor under your tree and sat him down in front of you and Jackson.
"Mom, dad" he paused looking up at the sky with squinted eyes. "Why is the sky blue?"
"Why do you think it's blue Noah?" Jackson answered with a question testing him to see what he thought.
He thought about it for a while and said, "Because it wouldn't be normal if it was another color. Imagine if it was red, that would just be scary." He told both of you and pretended to have chills just by the thought of it. You let him stick with the answer instead of explaining how blue is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. And how blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as smaller waves.
"Oh I have another question." He said loudly.
"What's that bud?" Jackson asked him.
"Why are watermelons grown on the ground and not on trees?"
"What?" You asked laughing. Why would this kid ask such a silly question.
Jackson laughed as well and began to tell him, "Well imagine if watermelons grew on trees and if this tree," Jackson explained while touching our tree. "-was a watermelon tree, all the watermelons would fall on our head and then that would hurt us." Jackson finished saying and falling back with his back onto the grass.
"And then we would die." Noah said crawling to were Jackson was while smiling at how silly his dad was being.
You went inside quickly to get the mini sandwiches you had made earlier to snack on and took them outside. You knew they were Noah's favorite snack and so you handed him one and he smiled happily.
"Thanks mommy."
You sat back down and kissed his head. You handed a sandwich to Jackson and he satisfyingly ate it in one bite.
"I have another question." Noah spoke up with half of his mini sandwich in his mouth. You passed him his juice box to help him swallow the bread and then he asked something which really surprised both of you. "Why are there people who look different from others?" Now that really shook you up, the fact that he had this question circling his little head made you realise how you've never explained this to him. You remember being small but never really questioning why everyone was different you just knew they were and thought of it as being normal.
"Do you not know?" He asked you both after noticing the long pause between both of you.
"In what way Noah? What do you mean by we're all different."
"Yes like daddy is different from mommy."
"You mean like one is a boy and one is a girl?"
"No I know that mommy." He smiled. "Like dad just looks different from mom, mom is a little darker than dad and then at school there are kids who are darker than me too and their eyes are different and so is their hair. Some have curly hair others have orange hair and some have gold hair. Why is that?"
Once he finished explaining, you realised what he meant. He was talking about all the different ethnic groups.
Jackson decided he would explain it since he had just the idea how. "Well Noah when you think about it, we're not all different. We may look different on the outside but on the inside we are all the same. Here, come here." Jackson motioned Noah to sit on his lap. "Give me your hand." Noah raised his hand and put in on Jackson's hand. Jackson set Noah's hand onto his chest to were his heart was. "Do you feel that?"
Noah widened his eyes at the faint feeling of his heart beating against his small hand. So far you loved the way Jackson was explaining this and you knew where this was going.
"Remember what that's called?" Jackson asked Noah.
"A heart."
"Yup. Now put your hand on my chest." Noah did what he was told and felt the same thing.
"And what is that Noah?"
"A heart."
"Good job bud, now go too mommy and do the same." Noah stood up from Jackson's lap and stood close to you putting his small hand on your chest.
"It's kind of like... pounding." He tried explaining.
"Yeah that's called beating. Your heart beats Noah." You told him.
He slowly nodded understanding what he was being taught.
"You see bud, we could all look different from the outside but we're all the same on the inside." Jackson tried reasoning with him.
You wanted to teach him something too so you spoke up and said, "That's why Noah, you have to be nice to everyone ok. Don't be mean to people, always be kind to others and talk to them no matter how different they may look on the outside because why?"
"Because we're all the same on the inside." He told you looking to see if his answer was right.
"That's right Noah." You encouraged.
"Come here I have an idea." You said standing up excited to share your idea and to visually make him see what you and Jackson were trying to explain. You walked into your art room and since you loved painting and making Noah join you from time to time, you had all kinds of stuff lying around. You had recently popped balloons with paint in them and so you grabbed three of the leftover balloons and asked Jackson to help you fill them up with red paint. Noah looked confused as to what you were doing but Jackson on the other hand thought it was brilliant.
Once all three balloons were filled up with the paint you walked outside and gave one to Noah and one to Jackson.
You squatted down to Noah's level and said, "Okay here's the thing sweetheart, were all going to throw the balloons on the floor and we're going to see what colours are inside ok?" He nodded understandingly and wanted to be the first one to throw. He threw his ballon up high in the air and it landed on the floor with a popping sound and red paint visibly flowing onto the grass. He made an 'ooh' sound and was ready to see the other ballon be popped as well. Once you and Jackson both had your turns you asked Noah what colour they were.
"They're all red."
"Exactly! Did you notice how mums ballon was green, mine was yellow and yours was pink?" Jackson asked.
"Yes."
"The same thing with people Noah. Just how the balloons were different colours outside they were all the same inside ok?"
"I get it now." He said happily. " I have to be nice to others too right? Does not matter if they're different."
"That's right bud." You said messing with his hair and smiling down at him.
Suddenly you came to realisation the sun was beginning to set and you felt the afternoon's breeze on your skin and so you went inside to grab a coat for you and your boys.
You spent the rest of the afternoon playing around with Noah and running all over. You all laid down on the blanket from before looking up at the sky beginning to see the stars shining.
"I have another question. Why do stars exist?" You looked at him and mentally laughed at how many questions this boy asked.
