Chapter 44

What the hell was wrong with him? He was so young. Everything was crashing down onto him, suffocating him. He was curled up in the corner of the washroom. Why did he feel like such a failure? He couldn't even take care of his own kid? He couldn't even save the one girl he truly loved. Tears were now streaming down his pale cheeks. His blue eyes seemed so dull.

Everything around him seemed so lifeless. What was the point of this anymore? Someone burst into the washroom. Wally looked over at him before running a hand through his red hair. He probably looked so pathetic. "Dude you're a mess" Wally said walking over, kneeling down in front of his best friend. It was sad to see him like this. He used to never be upset, always had his head held high. But now, now he was a depressing mess.

Then again Wally partially understood what he was feeling. If he lost Artemis then that would be the end of him. Being without her was like missing a piece of himself. "It's my fault, all my fault" he whispered to himself. The air around them was heavy. "Dick it's not your fault. Don't even think for a second that it is. Zee saved Mar'i's life, it's what she wanted" Wally said in a low voice.

However that only made him feel worse. He was such a horrible father. Dicks should have been the one to step up to save Mar'i not Zatanna. His heart was in such terrible pain. It took a couple minutes but Wally finally got him to stand up. All he could do was try his best not to cry. To fake a brave face. No one should see him like this. Not even his own daughter. He let everyone down, he let Zatanna down.

After what felt like years she got up from her bed once again. The curtains were still closed shielding any light from coming in. Standing up she shuffled into the washroom. Turning the shower on and stepping in. The water would be scolding hot to any other person. Fortunately she liked hot showers. They made her feel better, gave her time to think. To think about anything and everything.

What was she going to do? She didn't see her friends as much as she would like to. Conner was giving her radio silence and La'gann wasn't someone she could talk to about this. He didn't know Zatanna like any of her other friends did. That and he showed zero empathy towards anything. The hot water relaxed her muscles. Letting a relieved sigh escape her lips. She's been feeling awfully uptight lately.

Mostly because of what's happened. She didn't need any of her classmates sympathy. She didn't want it either. Megan was creating a new image for herself. One of a strong and fearless woman. If people were to see her broken down like this she wouldn't know what to do. Maybe there was something wrong with her or maybe there wasn't. Who was she to care? After the long shower she got dressed and headed outside.

Its been so long since she's seen actual light. The sun nearly blinded her when she stepped out into the cold outdoors. The temperature sending chills through her entire body. Most people seemed to be getting to class as fast as possible. Megan's teacher's gave her a couple days off. Just because of the horrible thing that has happened. Especially since Zatanna was one of her best friends.

She seemed to be losing everyone close to her. All of them slowly fading from existence. It hurt. Shoving her hands into her coat pockets she walked down the steps. The puffiness to her eyes wasn't as noticeable as before. Megan had an image. She would do anything to cover up her true feelings. She had to prove to everyone that she wasn't some reckless crybaby who couldn't take care of herself.

His father seemed to be there for what felt like an eternity. Stating a bunch of things and seemingly dragging out his stay. He wasn't welcomed here in the first place. Roquette was upstairs still sitting in front of the vanity. Her grip around the brush handle was quite tight. There was anger flooding through her. Kaldur was being odd lately and not in a good way.

She hated it, absolutely hated it. They promised each other to tell one another everything when they were married. Only for him to start lying to her face. All of this pain was beginning to become unbearable. Sooner or later she was going to snap and it wasn't going to be pretty. Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway downstairs. Muffled voices having a brief conversation.

Soon after that their bedroom door opened. Kaldur let a relieved sigh escape his lips. Glancing over to see her still sitting where he last left her. "My love I apoligise for my father's sudden intrusion" he said walking over towards her. Quickly she stood up, the stool she was sitting on scraping against the floor. Pulling a sweater on she walked out of their bedroom. "Where are you going?" he asked following her downstairs.

"Out" she said pulling her boots on.

"To where?" he pressed for answers.

"With Megan, at least she's truthful with me unlike someone I know" she said before slamming the front door behind her.

She was still sitting on the couch with the two kids. At least she was keeping them distracted. Damian didn't seem to stop cutting into the conversation. "Hey Aunt Artemis?" Mar'i asked looking up at her. Artemis looked down with a soft smile. She felt pity for Mar'i she really did. Artemis knew what it was like to be motherless. "Do you think mom is in a good place?" she asked in a small voice.

Her heart nearly shattered into hundreds of pieces to hear this. However almost immediately Damian scoffed. "Don't be an idiot she's not your real mother" he mumbled as the girl gasped. Artemis's eyes went wide in shock. How could he say such a thing? Zatanna was as close to a mother as Mar'i had. "Get out" she said in a low voice.

"Excuse me?" he said.

"I said get out of my house right now!" the girl screamed standing to her feet.

Artemis stood up pulling her back before she did anything crazy. The young girl was enraged, a fire sparking in her eyes. That's when Wally walked back into the room with Dick at his side. The boy stood up looking between the three adults and the girl. "Get out! Go! Damian leave!" she yelled pointing to the door. Hot tears brimming her eyes. He let out a huff and turned around leaving.

She turned around, Artemis suddenly felt a small pair of arms wrap around her torso. Muffled cries escaping the girls lips. Carefully she wrapped her arms around her. Everyone's hearts broke. Dick walked over, kneeling down and touching the girls shoulder. Letting go of Artemis she engulfed her father in a hug. "Why is he so mean? I know she isn't my real mother but that doesn't matter. I-I just want her to be okay" she cried out, spilling all of the emotions that she had been holding back.

"I know Sunshine, I know" he whispered.

Artemis walked over to Wally. There was a heaviness in the air. It made it almost hard to breathe. She was so choked up in all of these emotions. Wally could see that by just looking at her. Wrapping his arms around her he pressed a light kiss onto the top of her head. Why couldn't their lives be normal? Everything has just been so screwed. "It hurts so much" he whispered, pressing her face into his chest.

Gripping the fabric of his just tightly. All he could do was hug her and try his best to comfort her. "I know it does" he said in a low voice. Glancing over at his best friend who was comforting his own daughter. "Wally please don't leave me" she whispered, her voice beginning to tremble. It was becoming hard to keep such a calm composure. Especially when she felt like bursting out into an uncontrollable fit of tears.

"Don't worry babe, I'm not going anywhere" he said before pressing another kiss on top of her head.
