The funeral was a week later, Megan offered to accompany him. It was the least she could do during this hard time for him. The sky was dark and cold raindrops hit the ground as they walked into the grey cemetery. Conner had never met Wendy's parent's, in fact they were planning on driving out to her parent's house in the summer. Now the only way he was going to meet them would be next to her death bed.
There were a cluster of people holding black umbrellas as they crowded around a casket. It was closed, the smooth dark wood freckled with the drops of rain falling from the sky above. They both walked up, Megan lingering a short distance behind him. The corners of his blue eyes burned with tears as he stared at the closed casket a few feet in front of him.
He felt Megan reach down and grab onto his hand and give it a comforting squeeze. The funeral was quiet - save for a few broken sobs - and few words were said. Wendy's parent's were enveloped in a grim silence as they stared off into the distance. In the back of his mind he could hear her obnoxious laughter and see her mischievous smile.
Wendy Harris was special, she would never not be special to him. This exhilarating chapter of his life started with Megan and him separating only for it to end with the two of them to be drawn back together, oh the sweet taste of irony. Inside there was this painful longing that he felt that only grew the longer he stared at the casket.
All of the prayers said and eulogys spoken seemed to go over his head. His hair was damp, face painted with water, and he felt empty. Everyone who attended seemed to disperse after the last words were spoken and the funeral seemingly ended. The two lingered there for a couple minutes, Conner was stuck in a deep memory lapse.
The gentle squeeze that Megan gave his hand made the memories vanish instantaneously. He murmured something to the redhead before pulling his hand out from hers and walking up to the casket. Several things were already placed on top, a bouquet of roses, letters, pictures, and other personal items. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the necklace she had bought for him weeks ago. For a moment he stared at it trying to reminisce about the day he received it.
She never quite explained where she found it and how she decided to buy it but it seemed special to her somehow. Silently he said a few heartwarming words in his head before gently placing the necklace just under the cover of one of the roses. His hand stayed on the casket for a few seconds as he felt the rain drops and smoothness of the wood underneath his fingertips.
After that he promptly turned and shoved both hands into either pant pockets and headed off. Megan trailed after him and stayed silent the entire ride back, they took the bus. The rain didn't let up even when they got off and onto the university campus. His eyes were slightly red and there were tears blurring the corner of his vision. Conner didn't want to cry, not now. The door was closed behind him as he walked further into the dorm room and took a seat on her bed.
Megan quietly walked over and took a seat next to him. A low sound erupted in the back of his throat before a broken sob escaped his lips. He looked down as a few stray tears finally escaped his eyes and flowed freely down his cheeks. The young woman next to him simply wrapped her arms around his shoulders and pulled him to her side. They sat there for a long while as she let him cry into her shoulder.
Just hearing the strangled sobs made her want to cry herself. Conner was always so strong and emotionally devoid - it hurt her seeing him this distraught. Wendy was indeed someone special and she could see that. After all he used to look at her the same way he used to look at Wendy.

Eventually after much convincing Zatanna managed to get Mar'i to tell her what had happened. The young girl spoke briefly about her encounter with John Constantine. For the week Zatanna milled over the story before deciding to tell Dick. After all Mar'i was his child and ultimately deserved to know as well. Her classes ended rather early today, well her professor didn't show up for her second class so they all got to leave early.
