Topaz snuck out of the house early that morning and was on her way to town by the time Loui was outside. She had with her a pouch of money just in case. Her breasts were bound and flattened and she was wearing her brother's old clothes. Her chin was lightly dusted with cocoa powder to appear as if she had the beginning of a beard.
There were young men going to apply to become soldiers so she followed them. Some were talking to each other and some were silent but Topaz was thinking of a name. 'Tim.....? No. What about Bill....ew. Steven....? Naw!' She continued to think as she walked. 'Tobias! It's perfect! Tobias Anderson!' She grinned and cleared her throat, making her voice deeper. Her voice was very high so it was difficult but she made it happen.
She got to the building everyone was going into to sign up for the war. She waited in line. "Morning." A guy behind her said.
"Morning." She answered back, sounding as masculine as she could. It must've worked because the guy said nothing about her voice.
"How old are you, son?"
"Seventeen. And three quarters."
"Yikes.....they're starting young now aren't they.....?"
"I suppose." She turned back around, really nervous and excited. 'I can be helpful.....I can be strong....they'll see....' she got up to the table and stood on her tip toes.
"My god I almost didn't see you!" The man in a uniform behind the desk said. Topaz nodded a little. "Name?"
"Tobias Anderson."
"Age?"
"Seventeen and three quarters."
"Oh so we have a smart ass then? General Washington is gonna chew you up and spit you out, soldier!"
"I'm ready to face whatever it takes in order to free our country, sir." 'I'm gonna help.....'
"Hhmmm.....I like your attitude! It might be hard to find a uniform your size but we need as many as we can get here. Next!" He called. She walked past the counter and was lead into the back. A woman was standing there and handed her a coat, pants, boots, a hat, and a musket with a bayonet. She nodded.
"Thanks." The woman nodded back. She continued walking like an assembly line. There was a carriage and horses outside. Men were changing into uniforms and getting onto the carriage, ready to be driven off to the battle where troops were needed. She kinda darted off into a small patch of trees to change.
Once she was changed she left the trees. Her eyes widened when she saw her brother in an army uniform. She wanted to go hug him but knew she couldn't. 'He won't recognize me......I cut my hair and flattened my chest....but I'm still tiny.....' she sighed and walked out to where most of the men were chatting. They were mostly talking about how many women they've slept with and their families. Loui glanced at her, their gazes meeting. He tilted his head. She quickly looked away. 'Please don't notice me please don't find me out......' she thought, climbing onto the carriage. Loui followed and soon so did the rest of their squad. The carriage was full. The driver stepped on.
"Ok off to Lexington! The British are swarming and General Washington is losing troops fast!" The horses trotted off and the carriage started to move. Loui and Topaz were shoved close to each other. She avoided eye contact. 'This is it.....no turning back........'
