Chapter ninteen (Rose)

     Rose was afraid. She was afraid of being pregnant. Afraid of being a mother. Afraid of anyone finding out about her and Loui.
     But on the other hand, she was thrilled. Thrilled that Loui loved her back. Thrilled that she would get to have a baby with the man she loved.
     The baby would surely be born before Loui got back, and she didn't even think he knew of its existence. But still she would welcome it with loving arms and tell the truth. Rose could keep a secret, but she was the worst person on the planet at lying.
     She walked down the hall to the music room. Violet and her family left to check on relatives in the south, so she knew Jasper would be alone. She cautiously opened the door. "Miss Jasper may I speak with you? It's very important....." Jasper looked up from her piano playing, wearing a bright red dress.
"Of course come in!"
"What vivid colors you're wearing.....it looks beautiful on you...." Rose watched inside. Jasper smiled.
"Thanks! Penelope's favorite color is red......" She raised an eyebrow.
"You're in love with her aren't you....?"
"I think I am, Rose! It's a feeling I can't quite place but she's like a drug to me! And she's so beautiful......" Rose sat next to the taller woman.
"I'm happy for you my friend....." She looked up at her. Jasper smiled down at her.
"So why'd you come to me?"
"I needed to tell you something......."
"Oh? You seem afraid....is it about your cycle?"
"Yes....I-I.....I lied about having my virginity still....." Jasper gasped.
"Rose! You're not...??"
"I am.....I'm expecting....." she rubbed her belly.
"Congratulations! Who's is it.....?" Jasper managed to grin.
"That's who I wanted to talk to you about....." Rose cleared her throat. "......it's your brother's....." She winced at her one words. Jasper's eyes widened.
".......Loui's?"
"Yes...."
".......?"
"We made love the night of the explosion. We should've been more careful but we'd been saving our feelings for each other for so long......."
"So that's who he was in love with! You! He told me about you but didn't mention a name....and wouldn't...." Jasper put her hand on her face. "Rose, you're my best friend, and I know you're scared......so I will not tell a single soul what you've told me today......"
"Thank you......" She smiled gently, hearing the service bell shake violently, almost by accident.
"Oh...it's daddy! He must have rung it by accident....."
"I should still go check on him." She stood. "Thank you for the talk, Jasper."
"Of course! You're part of the family!" She smiled again and gingerly walked out of the room.
      The bell came from Benjamin's bedroom so she started to make her way over there. Her mind continued to wander to the child and Loui and wherever Topaz was. The girl had been missing for more than ten days.
     She gently opened the door to the bedroom. "Master Kramer? You rang the bell, sir." There was no answer.
