Money. The root of all evil. It is because of money why families are broken and happiness is ruined. It is what drives people to greed and eventually to their downfall.

Money is the reason why the Montenegro family can do everything and anything they want. If ever anyone of the grandchildren got in trouble with the law it would be quickly covered up and replaced with some fabricated story.

When Evan was disowned by Raúl Montenegro all the fortune was transferred to Ava. Now with a huge sum of inheritance sitting in her bank account all she had to do next was marry the Solis boy.

"Here Victor. Take this as compensation for getting involved in this twisted family we have." Alvin said passing him a check worth more than six figures.

"I can't take this." Victor said refusing to take the check. "My family owes your family a lot and taking this would look weak."

"Spoken like a true Travis. I did the same gesture for your father and he refused my offer as well. I knew you wouldn't take it but would you take it if I offered you an ultimatum?" This got Victor curious. "The money I am offering you not only pays off your family's debt but also gives you guys added income. Now if you don't take this I can easily call my father and have him deal with you personally, now if you decide to take the money you're free and will be left untouched. All I ask is stay away from Ava." Victor didn't say a thing but only tucked the check into his pocket as he placed his bag on his shoulders and made his way out. This was. The last time Victor Travis was to be seen.

The next morning all was quiet in Evan's humble abode. His wife and kid were still asleep as he laid in bed waiting for the sound of Ava's awakening.

In the room adjacent to Evan's the sun was peering through the window as Ava was calmly asleep. The rays of the summer sun woke her up. She wrestled in the bed trying to regain somber but it was no luck she was wide awake. She sat up on the bed and watched the glistening sun shine through the white satin curtains.

"It's as if nothing happened." Ava said whispering to herself. She threw off the comforters and made the bed the way she first saw it.

"You don't have to do that. Someone comes in during the afternoon hours to clean the house." Her brother had said standing by the already opened door of the guest room. Evan was stealthy and he knew his way around his house. He can go unnoticed at times.

Ava looked at her brother. "Here take the keys to my R-77, it's yours now. Consider it my birthday gift to you." He said as he threw her the keys. "Stay for a little while, have a cup of coffee and breakfast, then you can head out. I will brew you some." Evan said as he walked out of the room, Ava followed after.

"Kuya, why hasn't dad punished you? I mean don't get me wrong, you're lucky. But usually he punishes those who betrays the family." She asked with curiosity being that her father isn't the forgiving type even around family.

He sighed heavily, "Dad hasn't done anything to me because, I know one of the family's biggest and darkest secrets. If he punishes me, I won't hesitate to expose them all." Ava gasped. She knew her family had secrets but none as secretive as what Evan said. "Also, dad isn't the one pulling the strings, it's Lolo Raul. What he did at your debut was to protect you. He doesn't want you to be with Victor because it's Lolo's way of gaining control. You know Victor's family. His dad is the Admiral and has control over the Navy and Army. He's the second most powerful person right below Michael's father, the vice mayor, who on the next election will be taking dad's place. So you marrying Michael gives dad full control of everything."

"Making Lolo Raul, the puppet this time." Ava added as all the pieces were starting to add up.

"Exactly! Dad never wanted the both of us to be in the same situation as he was. Why do think dad never invokes violence among his enemies?" Evan asked rhetorically.

"Cause he doesn't want to get his hands dirty and if Lolo does all the dirty work he can file a case against him. Cause we all know that Raul Montenegro likes things done his way. It all makes sense now Kuya!" She said loudly as Evan signaled with a 'shh'. Ava's face free with embarrassment as she whispered 'sorry' to her brother.

"Seems like you told her." Karlie walks in as she gives Evan a kiss. "Good Morning Ava!" She said to her. "Good morning to you too Karlie." She greeted happily after sipping her coffee.

"It's Ate Karlie for you, Ava." Evan scolded as Karlie laughs. "Ano ba, Evan! It's okay, we're the same age and I don't like the he feeling of being called Ate. It makes me feel old. Anyways, I hope you can stay a little longer, I am making Eggs Benedict." For once Ava felt the burden of last night's event lifted once more by the compassion and care of Karlie.

"You need to come here often, Ava. This is a rare occasion when she makes Eggs Benedict." The three laughed as the sound of Baby Elie rang through the monitor.

Author's Note: Evan Montenegro is portrayed by Enrique Gil and Karlie Mendoza is portrayed by Liza Soberano. I know Liza and Nadine aren't the same age , but being that this is a fictional story their age will be the same. I apologize if it took a while for me to update this story. I have been busy with work and school. On top of that, I had major writers block for this chapter. Coming up with things to write isn't easy especially if you aren't in the proper mindset. Again, I apologize, but I thank everyone who has waited patiently for this update.
