Island Getaway
The beautiful blue sky and clouds could be seen outside the window of the jet. Ava and Michael have been up in the air for two hours. In those two hours, no conversation was happening. The aura was quiet and awkward. Whenever Ava left the room to use the restroom, Michael would just watch her not saying a single word. Ava has been trying to sleep for the last hour and a half but she had no luck. She was hoping to get at least an hour of rest before they land but it looked like that wasn't going to happen. On top of not being able to sleep, she was also very hungry. Instead of going out and seeing Michael, she used the intercom system her father had installed years ago to send messages to the pilots and stewardess who were on board.
"Ma'am Ava what can I do for you?" Asked the stewardess who signaled Michael to listen in.
"Just call me Ava, Miss Alexander, you're older than me, I should be referring to you as 'Ma'am' or 'Miss', but anyways can you get me a turkey and ham sandwich on rye, with Swiss cheese, light mayo, and extra tomato, please? Also, can you add a side of salt and vinegar chips along with a bottle of sparkling water? Thank you." Michael followed the stewardess to the kitchen located right behind the pilot's pit. The small mahogany wood kitchen was equipped with the latest appliances. Michael searched the cabinets and fridge to whip up a meal for his wife. He toasted the bread and battered it with butter and mayo before placing both slices of meat on the bread. He carefully sliced all the vegetables and layered them all neatly onto the bread. Miss Alexander the stewardess, handed Michael the sparkling water and salt and vinegar chips. He placed the cut sandwich, chips, and sparkling water onto the tray and headed for the private suite.
Ava sat on the bed reading China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan when a small knock landed on the door. She was so into her book she hadn't heard the multiple knocks on the door and because there was no response from Ava, Michael walked in slowly with the tray of food. He placed the tray on the foot of the bed and observed his wife who was so engrossed in her book she hadn't noticed him at all.
"Ava, food is ready." He said nonchalantly trying to get her attention. He tapped her leg and her attention turned to Michael. She put her bookmark on the page she was on and placed the book on the end table. She looked at the tray that was sitting near her feet and noticed Michael's eyes had not left her.
"Thank you." She said softly pulling the tray towards her. Michael smiled big. Silence filled the room as Michael watched Ava eat.
"Ava, I'm sorry," Michael said genuinely. "It was not my intention to raise my voice at you. I could've communicated how I felt much better, and what I said was triggering and unacceptable. You're not a child and I know that, nor am I your father, I will give you as much independence as you want, but please try not to be stubborn." Ava listened as she ate her sandwich.
"Look Michael, both of us are at fault here. I am sorry too for acting like a child. I am not used to having this much independence. All my life people have dictated what I wore, ate, said, and did. When you give me all this independence, it becomes overwhelming and I get sensory overload from it and don't know how to manage it. I'll try my best not to be stubborn." She placed her sandwich down and looked at Michael. She tapped the bed giving Michael the signal to come closer.
