The Dress
"Evan, are you sure about us moving to your parents place?" Karlie, who was putting Elie in her car seat, said hesitantly. "I mean I don't mind moving there. It'll save us so much money on rent, childcare and personal expenses, but with the relationship you have with your parents, especially your father don't you think that it's a bit weird." Karlie added as she helped Evan load up the last of their belongings into the black SUV his father had provided.
Karlie and Evan were a bit surprised when Alvin Montenegro asked his only son to move back home with him. Evan thought his father still had a grudge over him especially after everything the two Montenegro guys have been through.
"I mean it is a bit weird that he would do something like that, but I think about my mom and Ava. I don't want my mom to be lonely once Ava gets married and I want to be around my sister as much as possible. Plus, the Estate is big enough for us to raise Elie and the new baby once he or she comes out. I am thinking about the positive outcomes from living with my parents." Karlie listened intently as she settled herself into the SUV.
Evan did have a point. In a matter of months Ava will be moving out and getting married. But in the back of her mind it worried her about what her father might think about moving into the Montenegro Estate. It was bad enough telling her father that Elie is a Montenegro what more if she tells her father about her new living situation.
"Babe I promise, everything will be fine." Evan said with assurance as he grabbed her left hand and kissed it as he was driving. Karlie remained silent during the entire ride. It not that there was nothing to talk about, it's just that mentally and physically she wasn't feeling her best.
Back at the Montenegro Estate, Ava was in shock as she looked at her tidy untouched room. On her bed lay a dress bag with her name on it along with a card attached to the hanger.
Your dress arrived, I thought you might want to look at it before your mom does.
-DadA cute giggle came out of Ava's mouth as she read the card. She knew if her mother saw the dress she would not hesitate and open the large dress bag. Slowly she unzipped the plastic cover revealing the short a-line dress. It had a vintage flair the Ava admired. The bottom hem-line was knee-length and the beautiful flower embroideries made up the top of the dress. It all became real to her. She was getting married soon, giving her life away to a man she rarely knows, but for the sake of her family she's willing to do it. She saw what happened with her brother and she did not want a repeat of that.
Ava carefully takes the dress out of the bag. Slowly, she lifts the dress from the hanger as she gently feels her dress. She intently looks at the intricate detail of the embroideries and the stitching. A look of amazement was present knowing that the dress was hand-stitched and customized just for her. Her dress wasn't the type you'd see in bridal catalogs. It was uniquely Ava and that was how she liked it.
After examining the dress thoroughly, puts the dress down on her bed. As she removes her clothes, leaving only her modest undergarments. She picks the dress back up from the bed and turns the dress around revealing the back side of the dress. She begins to unbutton the dress, removing the hanger and placing it on top of the dress bag. Opening the back of the dress, she slips her petite body into the dress. She looks into the long mirror that stands in front of her bedroom door. The dress fit her perfectly, covering all the right places, but also hugging her body right. The dress did not make her feel confined. Ava glanced at herself again, realizing that she will be a married woman, it became more real when she looked at her left hand and saw a simple diamond ring. All that stopped abruptly when her mother opened the door.
"Mom, don't you believe in privacy?" Ava asked her mom, who stood frozen at the foot of the door in awe of the dress her daughter was wearing.
"Since when was this family ever given its privacy?" Her mother sarcastically stated, looking at Ava who still had the dress on. "I can't believe the dress came and no one told me about it." Her mother added with disappointment as she helped Ava button the back of the dress. The two didn't speak but looked into the long mirror as her mother swept Ava's hair back.
"You know this dress would look better if your hair was up." Her mother said tying her daughter's hair into a bun, breaking the short silence that occurred. "Did the veil come in yet?" Her mother asked.
"No. Just the dress." Ava simply said. "Mom, was this how you felt when you first tried on your dress?" Ava asked her mother who was now sitting at the edge of her daughter's bed right next to the dress bag.
"A lot of emotions were happening as I tried on my wedding dress. I was in the same situation as you, but I did not have a strong support system like you do, but that is beside the point Ava." Her mother said fighting her tears. She quickly wiped away the tears rushing down her face to avoid Ava from noticing.
"I am sorry I did not knock, but I came up to tell you that your brother is here. Go get dressed so we can all eat. Make sure you tell your father that your brother is here." Elena Montenegro got up from her daughter's bed and kissed her quickly on the forehead before heading out of Ava's room.
