It had taken Mimi nine months of hell to build up the courage to decide to leave Hatori but Mimi was finally ready. Mimi and Hatori had reluctantly come to the beach house with Shigure, Ritsu, Takashi, and Motoko and her family. Mimi had wanted to leave Hatori a week earlier but decided to put it off until they got back from the beach.
Mimi and Ritsu had decided to take a walk along the beach so they could talk.
"I can't believe you are actually going to leave Hatori. So what made you decide to go ahead with it?" Ritsu asked. She knew things had got really bad but Ritsu still thought Mimi was going to stick it out because she had been so pigheadedly stubborn up to now about staying with Hatori.
"It was what happened at Christmas that really opened my eyes; but you know how damn stubborn I can be and it's taken this long for it to really sink in. Things between me and Hatori are dead," Mimi replied.
"What happened at Christmas? You never mentioned it to me." Ritsu asked kind of hurt that Mimi had not confided in her.
"Sorry about that, the only two people who know are Shigure and Yoshi." Mimi said then told Ritsu what happened.
...Six Months ago December 23...
"Why won't you just tell me what it is I'm doing that is making you treat me this way? Then maybe I can change it," Mimi shouted at Hatori, her voice cracking with frustration.
"You would basically have to change everything about you Mimi," Hatori looked at Mimi with disgust. "Look at you. I don't know how you have let yourself become such a fat gaijin. Honestly how could you let yourself go?"
Mimi had maybe put on a pound or two at the most but other than that she was pretty much the same weight she was when they first met. "How can you say that to me?" Mimi asked tears flooding her eyes.
"Face it, you are just a bad wife and you will never understand what I want because you're not Japanese." Hatori shouted back at Mimi. He couldn't stand to look at the shell of a wife she had turned in to.
"If you feel that way why don't you just leave then," Mimi said crying.
"I have been asking myself the same question. And the answer is simple; I don't want to give you or my mother the satisfaction."
"So you would rather torture me instead."
"That's the only pleasure I get from you these days dear, seeing as how you won't let me touch you anymore." Hatori grabbed his coat and headed for the door.
Mimi ran after him and grabbed his coat and holding on to the end of the coat as if her life depended on it."I'm not finished. You're not going to run away that easily,"
In the heat of the moment Hatori swung around and slapped Mimi and said "Give me my damn coat." He instantly regretted what he did and was disgusted with himself.
This was the first time Hatori ever hit her and it left Mimi in shock. She immediately let go of the coat and held her cheek looking at him like a rabbit caught in the head lights of a huge truck about to be run over and completely squashed into road pizza.
"This conversation is over." Hatori said then turned to walk out. Hatori felt ashamed for what he did and paused then turned around and walked back to Mimi. Mimi had sunk to the floor and was holding her cheek and crying. Hatori crouched down to Mimi and said "Maybe it would be best if you spent Christmas with Ritsu or Shigure. I think the time apart would do us both some good."
"All we do these days is spend time apart Hatori. Even when you're home you are still somewhere else," Mimi got up off the floor. She was determined to salvage what little pride she had left and said, "Fine if you want me to go I will go. Please let me know when I can come back home." Mimi grabbed her hand bag and coat then walked out of the house. Shigure was shocked when Mimi turned up on his doorstep with nothing but the clothes on her back.
