"What's the matter Ami... I mean Mimi I can see you're hurting and depressed." Claudia asked in a soothing motherly tone that Mimi rarely ever heard directed to her by Claudia.
Claudia would talk to Mimi's siblings all the time with that caring voice. The one that would let you know that this person really wanted to hear your problems and help; but in Mimi's case she could count the amount of time she had heard Claudia talk to her in that way on one hand and it made Mimi feel awkward and angry.
Mimi scoffed at Claudia when she heard this "Oh please, like you care."
"I do care. I am your mother." Claudia replied still under the control of her maternal emotions.
"You're my mother you say, what a joke you never even wanted me!" Mimi said as she spat this at Claudia. "I was just a burden that you passed off to countless nannies. I mean you couldn't even muster up the kindness to let me get close to any of those nannies. No, the minute I would form a bond with one you would sack her and get another one. Let's be honest. You never loved me."
"I admit I was not a good mother but I only wanted the best for you." Claudia replied a little hurt by what her daughter had just said even though she knew it was true.
"How can you stand in front of me and lie to my face. I was a mother for three whole hours and I could have never dreamed of treating my child the way you treated me. I would have traded my life to keep him alive!" Mimi hated having to share something that was so personal and precious to her with Claudia, but it was the only thing Mimi had that she could use to try and make Claudia understand how much she had hurt Mimi. "Why don't you just cut the crap and go back to your perfect life and leave me alone." Mimi said then decided to lie back on her side; she could not stand to look at Claudia anymore.
''Fine I'll just cut to the chase then. Your grandfather passed away in July." Claudia said with pure delight as she hated him even more than she hated Mimi.
"So, what does that have to do with me," Mimi cut in, the fact that Claudia was taking pleasure in telling her, her grandfather had died was making Mimi feel sicker.
"The miserable bastard left everything to you just to spite me." Claudia answered glaring coldly at Mimi. She was enraged by the situation that man had left her in.
Mimi smiled from ear to ear as she said, "Oh, now I get it, you are here about your precious house. Dad was supposed to inherit it but he went and died before that old goat and now you're afraid I'm going to chuck you out." Mimi laughed, "This is rich and it's no less than you would deserve." Mimi turned so she could see Claudia and drink in her expression hoping it would be one of torment, but Claudia was not playing ball and stood there with a face as hard as stone.
"You're right. You and I have never had anything in common and I did look at you as a burden. I was even jealous because your father loved you so much. That stupid man always thought you would come to your senses and come crawling back. If you had he would have welcomed you back. I on the other hand was glad when you left and even more so when you didn't come back." Claudia's words were venomous. If it had been anyone else, Claudia's words would have cut them to the bone, but Mimi had grown up with Claudia's disdain towards her and was immune to it.
Mimi rolled onto her back and looked up at the sky then said "There's the Claudia I know for a minute there. I thought someone replaced you. Well you're in luck because I don't want anything to do with that house. Burn it to the ground for all I care. So you can have it as long as you never show your face to me ever again."
"Oh no; I don't intend to be in your debt, so here is a cheque for the market value of the house." Claudia set the cheque down next to Mimi. Then she pulled out two envelopes and a pen. Claudia took the papers out of the first one and said, "This transfers everything your grandfather left you into your name. Please sign where I've marked."
Mimi rolled onto her stomach, picked up the pen then signed the three copies. Claudia put two of the copies back into the envelope. Then she took out the papers of the other envelope and said "This is the contract's to transfer ownership of the house to me. Sign where I have marked." Mimi signed the papers and Claudia put all but one of the copies back into the envelope.
