close as strangers

It's been six weeks since he's been away, and Cristina was a hot mess.

She was currently on the phone with Luke again, for the 3rd time this week.  It was the most they've really talked since he left for the rest of the tour.  That's really only because they've been arguing over his new 'fake' girlfriend, Arzaylea.

Cristina didn't find it fair that he got to be all cute and cuddly with this hoebag, but she still couldn't be with another man while he was away because of the stupid promise they made.

Luke was always reminding her of that, and she was starting to despise him for it.

Anytime she brought up the whole Arzaylea situation, Luke knew where it was going and would bring up the promise right away.  Or whenever Cristina brought up the possibility of just enjoying another man's company while Luke was away doing things with Arzaylea, even though he claims he never does, the promise would come up.

Cristina isn't stupid, not really anyways.  She's noticed Luke's change, he's a different person towards her.  He's off partying more, making up excuses of why he can't talk to her, and posting so many things about Arzaylea.

Cristina was jealous, and just totally unhappy.

She predicted this would happen, but couldn't back down.

She was currently trying desperately not to cry over the phone, as she was hoping this would be the last conversation they'd ever have.

"Luke, stop yelling at me for just two minutes, that's all I'm asking."

He sighed through the line.

"Fine, what do you want to say now?"

"I can't keep doing this.  It's not healthy, for you or me.  We both know that.  We're holding on to this fantasy of a relationship that we both knew was never going to work out.  You've been away for almost two months now, we've stopped talking like we used to, and it's so difficult being away from you that I'm losing my mind.  I just want to move on, I need to move past this and get my life back to the unstable yet stable way it was before I met you."

Luke was silent, and Cristina almost thought that he had hung up on her until she heard a muffled sob.

"I know.  I never should have left you to begin with.  I just miss you so much, and I don't know how to deal with this empty hole in my heart right now.  I just, I can't.  We-"

That was when his voice broke, sending Cristina into full break-down mode, letting the tears fall freely.

"We used to be so close, Cristina.  How'd I let it get like this?"

Cristina wiped away the tears, trying to keep herself together.

"I don't know, Luke.  We were as close as strangers, it wasn't going to end perfectly."

Luke sighed and his voice was still shaky.

"So, this is it?"
