Chapter 9 - Stop & Smell The Dust On The Window Sill
As I walked through the doors, Ruby's head immediately flashed backward to look at me.
The first couple times she did this in the past, I was really concerned because I thought she was some kind of owl, but I've grown used to her weird head-turning talent now.
She got up and walked slowly towards me in confusion, seeing my disappointed face from the deal I made a couple seconds ago.
As she walked forward, I looked down to her hand and sure enough, she was lugging a fully knitted, very large, soft blanket behind her.
I stared in shock at the material and my face soon drooped into sadness. I was going to miss this perfect grandma of a sister.
"Lissa? What's wrong?" She said in a concerned tone.
"I," I paused, breathing heavily so I could say what I meant to say without breaking out into sobs.
As I breathed, I felt a pair of arms wrap around me and I immediately recognized them as Ruby's.
I chuckled bitterly. "Better make the most of this hug."
"What do you mean?" Ruby said worriedly.
I exhaled one more time before talking. "I made a deal with the boys."
Ruby looked behind me and glared. I was confused for half of a second but quickly put the pieces together a figured that they were standing behind me.
"What!?" Ruby pulled away from the hug but still held onto my shoulders so she could look into my eyes. "Lissa, what was the deal?"
"We made a deal that they will let you leave this place and never harm you ever, in exchange for me staying here and working as a maid.
"I put down some ground rules and one of them is that I can have a whole day to spend with you once every month," I assured her.
"What? Why can't I have a say in this? You're my sister and I can't leave you with them! I won't leave you with them!" Ruby protested.
"Ruby, I'm doing this for your own safety! I don't want to lose another sister!"
"WELL I DON'T TO LOSE ANOTHER SISTER EITHER!! DO YOU REALIZE THE POSITION I'M IN RIGHT NOW!?"
I stepped back in shock. I know it's hard to believe since we're siblings, but Ruby has never yelled at me before. I mean, unless we're going to school and she wants me to get in the car.
Ruby inhaled and exhaled as she continued, tears traveled down her cheeks. "Melissa, I can't live with myself knowing that the one family member that actually cared about me was kidnapped and probably being treated as some cleaning sex slave and that I won't be able to do anything about it.
She said "Melissa"...
"I can't call the cops because then the guys will move farther away from me and take you with them. I can't try and steal you back because they'll take you away again." Ruby dropped the blanket and sobbed into her hands. "And I can't do anything about it. I can't."
Now was my turn to run back to her and embrace her into a bear hug. I had to make up for all of the millions of other times she's done the same to calm me down.
"Ruby, I know mom is never around to talk to us since she's working her problems away, she probably doesn't even know that I've been kidnapped, but I'm sure you can survive without her, just like we always have. Just try and survive without me too, okay? I'll still see you, I promise, just not as often. I'll be alright, but will you?"
