Chapter 29 - Hey, Friend

You really think that they'll let you get away that easily?

They're looking for you.

They will find you.

They will catch you.

You'll lose everything.

You'll have to go back there.

You can't escape the past.

I sat up in panic, looking around to study surroundings.

Oh yeah... I'm here.

I was in the alley between two of the apartment buildings.

It was cozy, considering it wasn't a house. The balconies above me were a nice cover from the rain, and boxes of useless things contained old blankets and pillows. It wasn't a mansion, but it was nice for a homeless person's space.

You can't escape the past.

That thought floated around my mind all night. It made it hard to sleep, but I still got a decent amount.

It looked around 7:00 AM, so the sun was bright in my eyes and the sky was a sweet bright blue.

I rolled up the blankets and set them against the wall along with my pillows and backpack. Grabbing the plastic bag full of money, I set off towards the Seven Eleven to use the bathroom and maybe buy something.

I walked out of the gas station with a Snickers bar and found a young man staring at my things. He wasn't doing anything with them; just looking.

"Um... Excuse me, sir. Do you need some-" The man turned at my voice and I took a step back from shock. "Oh." I finished.

"Melissa? I knew it was you! I recognized the backpack." Justin smiled as he brought me into a tight hug. "What're you doing here? You never come to school anymore."

"Hey..." I patted his back awkwardly. "How's Ruby doing? I haven't seen her in a while."

"She's warming up to me." He said proudly after he let me go. "It's taking a while but she's starting to tolerate me. She's still really sad though. Do you know why?"

"Um... Yeah... I have an idea of what it could be." I sighed.

"Really? Maybe you can tell me so I can cheer her up better. I could probably relate in some way."

"No," I said, almost too quick. "No, you couldn't relate. It's... a really terrible situation. I need to see her. Maybe that will make things better."

"Really?" Justin pulled out his phone. "Do you want to call her? You could call her, and meet up." He handed me his phone and I started putting dialing her number. "Plus, I could finally have her contact and talk to her out of school." He muttered the last part.

I chuckled and excitedly put the phone to my ear. It rings a few times.

"Hello?" I heard her voice and almost cried.

"Hey, Ruby. It's Melissa."

She choked. "Hey, friend. This is really bad timing, so I'll call you back, okay?"

I could feel her teeth grinding as if trying not to give something away. Ruby hung up and I gave a confused look.

"Something's wrong."

~Yesterday Afternoon~

RAY'S POV

We drove to the house that Melissa's phone was. I went slightly over the limit so I could get there faster. Thankfully, we never got pulled over by any cops. Cops can be so stupid sometimes.
