Chapter 49 - Familiar
I sighed as I fell back onto my bed.
I just want to let go of all of my problems; drop all of this baggage and forgive everyone. Although it'd be nice to do, it wouldn't change the fact that a pedophile is supposedly after me, or that I was bullied by my "boyfriend" for years. It wouldn't bring my sister and dad back to life or remove the scars on my arms.
I wish everything could just leave me alone for at least a day; the people, the thoughts, the emotional baggage. It was all just so stressful to think about every day.
I closed my eyes and I could feel Mason's gaze at me through the doorway. He sighed and I felt him slip his arms under my back and legs to shift me so I was laying properly on the bed. I groaned in response and he chuckled.
"Just let me sleep," I mumbled and he ignored me and continued to push me to one side of the bed and put the covers on top of me. I groaned again and I felt the bed dip next to me. I opened my eyes to see what was happening and saw Mason laying next to me on my bed but on top of the covers. His eyes were closed as he laid on his back.
I wasn't too upset about Mason lying there. At least he was giving me space by lying on top of the covers and facing the ceiling. If anything, he gave me a sense of comfort. He showed that I can just relax for a bit and he wouldn't bother me. I stayed silent and looked back up at the ceiling before I let my eyes fall closed and my problems melt away.
~Time Skip~
I let out a small moan as I shifted and I felt a body tense up next to me. I open my eyes slightly and I found that I was facing a chest and my arm was gripped around a waist. My eyes widened and I froze for a few seconds. The smell felt... familiar...
Marcus?
I looked up and saw Mason staring down at me with a wide-eyed expression and I thought I saw a bit of blush. A quickly took my hand back and sat up next to him. "S-sorry," I looked away from him. "That was probably really uncomfortable for you."
"Not really." I could feel him give an awkward shrug next to me. "Was it uncomfortable for you?"
I thought for a second. It was actually one of the most comfortable naps I've had in a while. I felt like I could finally relax... "No," I mumbled in response and I felt my cheeks heating up.
"Well, at least you got some sleep." He smiled as I glanced back at him. "Hey, your mom came in a few minutes ago and said that dinner should be ready in like... thirty minutes. I think she was making curry."
I'm not hungry...
"Okay, sounds good." I gave a weak smile. "Are Justin and Ruby still not back yet?"
Mason shook his head with a sly grin that made me feel uneasy, already knowing what he was thinking. "Nah, they're probably doing the nasty as we speak. Those lovebirds can't get off of each other even during school."
I frowned at his response and searched my brain to quickly change the topic before I traumatized myself by thinking about those two. Sadly, that doesn't come easily to a depressed, socially awkward teen.
Mason let out a laugh that caught my attention and I realized that I was having an angry staring contest with the blanket covers for several seconds straight. "You're an interesting girl, Melissa." Mason grinned as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders. I tensed slightly but shrugged off the feeling, beginning to get used to affection even though there was nobody around to convince that we were a couple.
"Hey, Melissa, baby?"
Jordan?
I looked up to see my mom hesitantly starting a conversation in the doorway. I could see that she was holding back on cheering us on for being a "couple" and I appreciated that she was trying to not utterly embarrass me... But something felt wrong. "Dinners ready."
Mason took his arm back and nodded at my mother. As she walks out of sight, Mason began to scooch out of the bed and he held his hand out to me when he stood up. I didn't really understand why he wanted me to take his hand. I was getting out of bed, not walking down steep stairs in a ball gown with 10-inch high heels. I took his hand anyway, afraid that it would come across as rude if I ignored it and he gently pulled on my arm to get out faster. Once I finally got out he brought me into a hug and lead us to the dinner table where my mom was waiting with food already on the plates she set out for the three of us.
Mason's been staying here for so long, I think my mom already considers him a son-in-law, so I wasn't really surprised when they immediately started a casual conversation about self-driving cars. I honestly don't understand why my mother is okay with him staying over for so long. I have a hunch that she's letting him do so because she doesn't know how a regular parent would act in this situation. She's been absent from our lives for so long, I doubt she's got an understanding of what's considered normal and what's not.
I continued eating my curry in small bites, listening to the two of them talk. I already felt like I've eaten too much and I hadn't even eaten a third of the plate I was given.
"Melissa, eat your curry. It's not bad is it?" My mom smiled at me but she gave off a threatening aura.
"N-no, it's good!" I quickly told her, fearing that hesitation would only lead to more problems. "I'm just not really hungry."
"I'm letting your boyfriend stay here for as long as he needs. The least you could do is finish your plate."
Ah. She's letting him stay for leverage.
She sighed and I looked back down at the plate. It really was a good dish but just thinking about any more food makes my stomach feel queasy. I turned away from it before I regurgitated the little I had already eaten.
I could see almost the annoyance rolling off of her and I wondered if she'd finally been pushed to the edge about not knowing the truth of why I am... well, the way I am. There was a rapid knocking at the door to interrupt the tension and I quickly stood up and walked to the door before she could give me an excuse to stay.
She seemed nicer before, why was the curry such a set-off? It's not like Mason wouldn't end up eating the rest of my plate anyway, that's what he's been doing for the past month and she never said anything against it until now. She doesn't even try telling me what's wrong when she's in a bad mood so I don't understand why she's taking her anger out on me today. I looked back at the table to see my mom still giving me the look and my eyes traveled to Mason. He gave me an teasing smirk before scooping up some curry from my plate and spooning it into his mouth while mom wasn't looking. I chuckled and turned back around toward the door.
Of course, he's eating the rest of my plate.
As I opened the door, I couldn't help but give Mason a final glare and I stuck my tongue out at him. I turned back to whoever was at my doorstep when my name was called in a familiar voice.
"Melissa, grab the things you need. We need to leave right now."
My smile dropped and I stared in horror at the figure as I took a few steps back.
"Ray?"
