Jeff had decided to return with Ben on account of me. He thought he could calm his boss' nerves by returning; while there he could get info on the latest disturbances and figure out where to go from there- training wise.

It was tough to see him go after being with him for what seemed like such a long time, but at least as Jeff puts it, 'its for your safety and mine'.

Smile would be left with me as my guard dog and I would be to my own devices until he returned...which he refused to specify when that'd be.

The house was starkly silent and I had no idea how to fill my time since before I had wasted it pestering Jeff. Smile awaited patiently by the door like a soldier awaiting commands, but I found I had nothing to do or say to him.

The tattered little cottage was now a vacuumed tight pocket of silence. A space so still I couldn't even hear the fall breeze outside.
Rain would make snow soon, and this place is far from prepared for winter. How would the changing weather affect us?
I'm sure Jeff and smile make due, but I'm mortal, a normal human to an extent. I could freeze while they'd be fine!

I sighed. This whole lifestyle still needs some getting used to.

How exactly would we go about life now? How would things change?

I'm not exactly sure when it happened or why, but I remembered my cell phone from back home and decided to check it out to fill the time.

Making my way back to my room, I shuffled through the small duffle bag that I'd slowly emptied out while settling in. I found my cell phone towards the bottom with various other items.
I had powered it off since I'd ran away and hadn't touched it since. With a tinge of reluctance stinging my fingertips I powered on the device.

The single minute that it took to bring my phone back from the dead was...well...agonizing would be an understatement.

At last my device had lit up with my lockcreen, a cheesy 'Keep Calm' phrase decorating the background.
My thumb left a grimy mark as I swiped my way to the main screen, a few measly apps making a home in it.
Within those few solemn seconds my phone began to vibrate and ring profusely.

The headers for each message was from either a friend or even my parents. It's nothing I didn't expect.

I knew my heart wouldn't be able to take any of my parent's messages, but since I'd never talked to my friends before they left, let alone understood how they must feel about me, I opened those first.
