A new beginning

The Sheriff comes to visit

We were sitting in the parlor after supper, when we heard someone coming. Annie looked out the window" well what do we have here, looks like we have the sheriff." I started to get nervous" great, now I get to make curtains for my jail cell."

Megan nodded" well they were true to their word, they said they were going to send the Sheriff."

Annie looked at us both" you two don't worry about this, I will take care of everything."

Annie walked to the door, " you two stay put, unless I call for you." She grabbed her shawl as she went on to the front porch," Evening Sheriff, what brings you out here this time of night?"

The sheriff got down from his horse" well I think you know what this is about, this isn't a social call."

Annie put on her most charming smile" I have no idea what your talking about Jack."

He smiled" now come on Annie, you knew that rat would come and tell me."

Annie smiled" well I still don't know anything, why don't you tell me what is going on?"

Jack shook his head" Annie, you are a real piece of work,I have come to question your granddaughter about shooting Mr. Woodson in the arm."

Annie smiled" Oh that, well he is just a big baby it was only a graze."

Jack shook his head" Even if it is just a graze, he was shot and wants to press charges."

Annie looked at him" well he shouldn't have come on to my property to threaten her."

Jack looked at Annie " what do you mean threaten her?"

Annie called" LIZZIE DEAR!" I came out on to the front porch, Megan came with me" Yes grandma?" Annie smiled" the sheriff here didn't know the whole circumstances of your little shooting."

Jack smiled up at the beauty before him" yes Mame, I heard you shot a man this afternoon?"

Lizzie walked down to where they were standing" well he threatened me and my family, so I did what I thought was right."

Jack looked down in to the prettiest eyes he had ever witnessed" could you explain to me the particulars?"

Lizzie smiled" well you see they came onto this property telling me to pack up and leave or they were going to make trouble for my grandmother here." He urged her to continue" so I got tired of her bullying me, I went in and grabbed the shotgun loaded it."

Jack nodded" then what happened?"

Lizzie looked at Megan" Megan was trying to get them to leave, they wouldn't leave."

Megan nodded" yes I was telling them that this was private property and they needed to leave before Annie got home."

Jack nodded" so what happened next?"

Lizzie smiled" well you see I came out and fired a warning shot, you should have seen their faces, they had to have wet themselves."

Megan snickered" I could smell something foul creep out of them too."

Jack had a stern face" well continue?"

Lizzie nodded" I fired another warning shot, and told them the next one was not going to be one if they didn't leave the property."Annie was laughing behind her hand, and I finished" so I aimed for his arm and shot him just grazing him."

Jack nodded" well you shouldn't be using guns in the first place, and second I am going to have to take you in."

Annie glared at him" wait just a minute, she isn't going no where, she didn't do nothing wrong."

Jack shook his head" she shot a man in the arm, he is pressing charges."

Annie was seething mad" you know this is a bunch of bull, he is just to big of a sissy that he has to fight dirty."

Jack nodded" I know that but it is the law, I have to take her in, I don't want to but I have to."

Annie started to yell, I stopped her" Grandma it is okay, I will go and sit in my jail cell."

Megan looked at me " but Lizzie all you did is defend yourself and your family."

I smiled" I know but I know that Grandma will have this taken care of first thing in the morning."

Annie smiled at Lizzie, but glared at Jack" you know I will dear, I will have you out as soon as I can."

Jack nodded" I will give you a few minutes to grab somethings before we go." I walked into the house, I grabbed a bag in my room and filled it with a couple of books, knitting, and a couple of dresses.

Annie and Megan watched as I was headed off to jail, Megan and Annie went to visit David and Jake. When they got there Jake and David heard about what happened. Jake was ready to go town to bust me out of jail. David held him back from doing that" Jake you will just make things worse." Jake nodded" I want them to pay for ruining our lives."

Annie smiled" they will by the time I am done with them, they will have to leave town."

Megan nodded" look Annie I know that Lizzie wanted to tell him about the baby, but he needs to know."

Jake heard the word baby" what baby?"

Annie nodded" Lizzie is going to have your baby, she is just over three months along."

Jake stopped " what? I am going to be a father?"

Annie nodded" yes and when this is all said and done with, I am going to take care of you for impregnating my granddaughter."

Jake cringed" I know but I will take it, I love her with all of my heart and soul."

Annie smiled" I know but right now let's focus on how to remove these thorns from our sides." Tomorrow was going to be a long day so everyone went to bed, Annie and Megan went home. Tomorrow was going to be the day of reckoning.
