Chapter 39

Harry's pov-

I jump straight into the car driving home as fast as I can, I still can't come to the realisation that Kyle was pretending to be one of Ruby's friends, but why Ruby? I can't seem to wonder what if Banks was in work today I didn't find Kyle as Jack and he actually went to meet Ruby, who knows what could of happened to her, I knew my job comes with it's risks but this is the biggest threat I've ever had, I'm just so glad the consequences weren't as bad as they could have been. When I finally pull up on the drive. I unbuckle my seatbelt sprinting into the house.

"Ruby!?" I call of Ruby hearing no answer, I start to panic what if Kyle had backup, I couldn't live with myself if I've put Ruby in danger. I continue shouting her name running upstairs checking every room, still no look, I run through the kitchen checking the garage and the dining room, she's literally nowhere.

I glance out of the window and see her sitting in the garden, since when the fuck does she sit in the garden? I jog round to the back door and run up to her, wrapping my arms around her lifting her from where she was sitting before she could even say anything, hugging her more tightly than ever before. She seems taken back at first, but soon her hands are around my neck hugging me close, I continue to hold her, it's the only way I know she's definitely okay, now she's in my arms I'll keep her safe.

"Um Harry are you ok? Just you've been hugging me for the past 15 minutes?" She questions breaking me from my thoughts, I place her back to standing level.

"Ruby I need to tell you something, it's going to take a lot of explaining, I'm not even supposed to tell anyone this but you need to know."

Ruby's pov-

"Ruby I need to tell you something, it's going to take a lot of explaining, I'm not even supposed to tell anyone this but you need to know." He says whilst sitting on the patio chair and pulling me to sit next to him. I give him a slight nod to start whatever I need to know.

"As you now know I'm a detective, the case I've been working on recently has been a murder case, of a girl around your age, her name was Zoe, and she was stabbed." I gasp slightly at what he says not realising how serious this case was.

"There have been two main suspects in her murder, her dad and her boyfriend, throughout our investigation it seemed most evidence pointed towards her father, however I had my doubts and there was just something about her boyfriend, but I have to stay professional and if the evidence points another way I can't get in the way of that.

We arrested her father and he was awaiting a trial, however recently, the day when you came to the office with me?" He looks at me to see if I remember, I think back to the day, sitting in Harry's office I remember about the phone I technically stole, I hope it has nothing to do with this, I need to check my bag to see if their's a reply actually. I'm awoken from my thoughts when Harry continues

"So the reason I was called into work that day was that there was more fingerprints found on the knife not just her dads, also Kyle her boyfriend, but that wasn't the only thing Banks, my boss had received an anonymous piece of evidence that Kyle domestically abused Zoe, and that on his past record he had been previously arrested for domestic violence with another girl, therefore we had to organise another interview with Kyle, that's what I was planning when you were siting in my office." I nod at Harry so he knows I'm still listening, quite taken back at all the seriousness of his job. "

"So the interview was supposed to be today, but Banks was off, so I was forced to do a house drop in, so this morning I went to Kyle's flat, but once I went to knock on his door someone bumped into me." He pauses, I rack my brain wondering who it could be, maybe the girls dad, I wait for a answer but Harry stays silent.

"Who was it Harry, who did you bump into?" I ask growing impatient.

"Jack, your school friend Jack was at Kyle's flat." I am completely shocked Jack what would he have to do with a murder case? Harry must notice my confused face as he says

"I was confused at first as well, I went in the flat passed Jack to try and find Kyle he wasn't anywhere to been seen as when I went back to the door jack was gone as well, I ran after him until he turned down an alleyway and punched me in the face." I look up to Harry seeing a slight bruise on his check and jaw my fingers trace the bruise, I lightly kiss it better.

"Are you okay? He hit you, why would he do that?" I ramble becoming worried.

"I'm fine Ruby, he came off a lot worse." I frown at what he says but he carries on talking.

"So I punched him back, I tried to find out why he ran, that was what I didn't get why he was running as far as I knew he hadn't done anything wrong, he wouldn't answer so I pushed him against the wall, and something started to peel from his face, I was freaked out, who even has stuff like this on the face, at first I thought his skin was peeling off, but soon I noticed his skin was all there, this was more like a rubbery mask, that's when his face changed his skin was darker his nose thinner, it wasn't Jack Ruby, it was Kyle."

"Kyle? The boy that murdered his girlfriend was pretending to be Jack?" I ask becoming scared.

"The thing is Ruby I don't think he was pretending to be him, I think it was Kyle all along. Even when you first met him even you weren't sure if you remembered him? He was just lucky you believed him." I'm confused at first but soon the realisation of this hits me, that I've been spending time with a suspected murderer, I took Alexa with me to meet a suspect of a murder case, I put not only myself but also Alexa in danger, my eyes start to blur and I feel myself crying, angry at my own stupidity. Harry pulls me onto his lap and wipes my tears away.

"Shhh, Ruby stop crying it's no you fault there was no way you could know, I'm a fucking detective and I didn't realise." I look at Harry slightly smiling trying to cheer me up I give a small smile back.

"But Harry why would this Kyle pretend to be to know me from school, what do I have to do with this?" I ask.

"I've been asking myself the exact same thing."
