The doctor had finished and put my arm in a cast just before Landon woke up. I went back into his room about ten minutes before the medicine wore off.
"Hey baby, do you feel any better?" I asked him.
"Uh-huh." He mumbled, obviously the medicine had not worn completely off. "You got a cast!" he slurred. I nodded. "Can I sign it?" he asked.
I laughed, "Of course!" I reached on the counter and got a pen off of it and handed it to him. I put my arm on the rail of his bed, he tried to lift his arm, but he still couldn't.
"Man! Come over to this side, I can still use my left arm, it just won't be as pretty." He groaned.
"It's okay" I said as I walked over.
He lifted a shaky hand and touched the cast with the pen. "Don't look yet!" He shouted and shot me a smile.
"Well fine then!" I turned my head to the side and covered my eyes with my other hand.
I heard him laugh and felt him writing on my arm. After about 3 minutes he said I could look.
He had drawn a heart and inside it had his initials and mine. Under it said "I love you more than you will ever know! I'm sorry you got hurt, honey. -Landon"
"I know how much you love me! Now, you don't know how much I love you." I gave him a smile. When he was about to object I just winked and kissed his cheek. "Let's just call it even then."
"No way! I got hit with a giant stick for you! I saved your life like three times!"
"I could have left you in the house! Plus I saved your life twice. So, you're welcome!" I said.
"Fine! We're even then!" He said with a grunt. I leaned over again and kissed him softly on the lips.
I couldn't believe that we were already joking about the horror story already. Whenever I was around him, I didn't feel the need to worry anymore. He made me feel so comfortable and loved. I knew that if anything were to happen, he would die trying to save me, not that I would let him.
There was a knock on the door. "Mr. Grant? Mrs. Asher?" I turned and saw a police officer standing at the door. "I'm Sergeant Gubler, I need to have a word with both of you." He said in a monotone voice.
"About what?" Landon asked.
"About Jared Asher." He said. "He said you broke into his house and tried to kill him and dumped his body in the woods to die then proceeded to steal his car."
"What?" I was the one to talk this time. "We didn't break into his house. I live there so I believe I would be aloud inside. He attacked us first, with a weapon by the way. When we tried to leave, he followed us into the woods, were he attacked us again, with another weapon. We left and I called the police and told them where to find him once we got to a phone."
He was writing things down in a small notebook. "And what were the "weapons" he used, ma'am?"
"The first one was a baseball bat and the second was a large branch." Landon replied.
"And why would Mr. Asher want to kill you?"
"I told his secret to my grandmother. He was going to kill us, we tried to fight him, I guess it pissed him off, and then he REALLY wanted to kill us."
"And what was his "secret"?"
"That he beat me, my sister, and my mother. Then he raped me and my sister."
"Ma'am that is not true. I would like the real reason your father would be made enough to kill you?"
"What do you mean she's lying?" Landon shouted.
"One of our officers visited the residence this morning and questioned the family. Both the mother and the daughter denied ever having Mr. Asher touch them in any way he was not meant to."
He has brainwashed them. Kris always did whatever dad wanted and mom was too scared of the consequences if she told anyone the truth.
"Maybe they're lying!" Landon was livid now.
"Landon, it's no use. They aren't going to tell anyone anything." I whispered to him. I turned back towards the officer. "The truth is that I left home to live with my grandmother. They left home and I went back to get everything I left there and my father caught us. He was mad about me leaving and things got violent. Landon and my father fought some and it continued all the way to woods. Landon's truck broke when we accidently drove into the ditch and he had to get to the hospital right away, so we took his car and we were going to give it right back. That's all." I said in a defeated tone.
I looked down at Landon and saw him shaking his head.
The officer closed his notebook after scribbling something in it. "That will be all for now. I'll contact you I we need any more information. Have a nice day." He left the room without saying anything else.
"He's brainwashed them. They are never going to talk. He's never going to get in trouble for what he's done." I mumbled.
"It's going to be okay. Remember, I'll always be here to protect you." I said in a soothing tone. He picked my hand up and pressed his lips against it.
